Filling our new living room.

The final room in our new home is finished. The question is, how to fill it?!
We have a two seater sofa and an armchair. We will put artwork on the walls.
We are lacking in wall space to put furniture against.
The 'unseen' wall in the pictures is 4 metres of sliding doors.

Hello Hannah,

Do you have artwork already? Are you looking to get some bespoke pieces? Or purchase some select pieces? Do you have a theme, subject or genre in mind? Oh, the questions keep coming!

Really, the most important question is: Do you wish to theme your room around the colour and style of your sofa and arm chair, as you already have these?

Ultimately, whatever you're answers are, you need to firmly fix in mind some key pieces of furnishings that you REALLY love, then build your room around those key furnishings. Once you've established an "anchor" to build on, every decision you make on decorating that room will be so easy!

So, if you can follow through with a response about artwork, it'll be great to see where you're going with that subject also!

Hi Hannah! What the room may lack in wall space, it certainly makes up for in contemporary style! A gawgeous floor lamp with a set of glass - coloured tables would look stylish. Ottomans which can now be bought in an array of colours could be placed in several hotspots in your room. Also: what about creating a calming focal point with a free - standing fish aquarium? Your options are endless .... Just don't make the mistake of rushing out and buying things to fill the space that you realise after a couple of weeks you don't like!

I love your sofa and assume you need to use that door next to it.... Agree with everyone that built in shelves on either side of the fireplace would be step 1. Rather than having your tele in front of the window, how about having it in the alcove to the left of the fireplace, but having it swing out so that you can view it in all areas of the room? I would then put the trunk in front of the window and your new armchair where the trunk is. A lampshade that doesn't create a pool of light under it would be better. Something round so it gives diffused light and then a lamp in the corner near the sofa on a little table, or a shelf built into that alcove, would be lovely for ambient lighting. And I think a stove that you can't or won't use would be a waste, there. If you would use one, by all means, put one in. Otherwise, you can get simple, industrial wall brackets for guitars and other instruments. Your guitar would look gorgeous mounted in there on an angle. I'll try and find a pic of what I'm talking about, but they clip into place and then when you want to use them, snap them out again.... pretty and practical!

Hi there, I'm wondering how you're getting on?!! How about a Bali pod by the sofa arm with the throw on? You could have a bespoke piece to add interest and colour ....and also allow you to sit comfortably in the sofa with a drink close by (rather than having to reach to the coffee table every time you want a sip!). This is the sort of thing I'm thinking.....our pods come in 7 shapes, 5 core fabrics and loads of colours ...or you can use your own fabric, so you can make quite a personalised statement!! We moved into our first home just before Christmas and have finally decided to begin working on our living room/dining room! It's a new build property so very plain, and the table and chairs is the contemporary look we want to go for. The sofa, as we've been told in the past, doesn't go with the look we want but unfortunately it's not something we can afford to change at this point..... HOWEVER, we are looking at painting a wall or wallpapering a wall and need some expert advice. Which wall? What colours? Photos below. Thank you in advance!!!
