Slate fire surround

Would like to paint our outdated slate and brick fire surround a grey colour any suggestions on which type of paint. Gas fire has been removed it's now an open working fire.

slate, my oh my, my home was full of it and I got rid of the lot, if you like it paint it white as I did and it worked brought light to the fire place but I would open up the fireplace and put a lovely wooden lintel above.

Not sure about white was thinking of a light grey. The feature wall is being papered in josette grey/white.

What type of paint do we use is it heat resistant?

We do have a Steptoe's up here not far from us but it's (dare I say it) wretched! Dark, not clean, badly organised. The one near you, though, AMAZING! We go down every year and take two big cars (we have a Picasso and our friends who live in Devon have a Forester), lol, fill them to the brim every year:) Last year we ended up shipping a lot of it back to Scotland as otherwise we wouldn't have got us, the luggage, and the Roo in to go home!

Make a frame to fit on the inside to whatever width you want. Screw it on to the inside of the frame from the other side ( which is hollow ) and then it will sit flush with the frame. I'd probably paint it black to match the fire, or match it to the frame.

Your room is lovely and I really like the black coffee table and side table. Black always lifts a neutral room. The fireplace surround is nice, but I think it would be better painted white, or for more drama, black. A rug would be nice but I don’t think the room really needs one, and i love a rug!

Hmm, I actually think the slate is gorgeous. Could you try painting the mantel? You might find that lifts the whole thing?

I'd be very cautious about painting the slate if you're using an open fire.Personally, I like the slate, but I'd change the mantel shelf. You could repoint the slates which would also improve the appearance.
