How would you renovate this old mill?
Comments (23)We bought an old Mill house 4 years ago and are still decorating and renovating. I think we always will, but absolutely no regrets! I love it! I will confess that I have made a few mistakes, which we are now fixing, as we now know what we would like and what suits the building. I completely agree with the comments on lime plaster. All of the rooms are light but soft colours and I have fallen in love with Crown and Rose Authentic Chalk paint. We have dogs and I love the way that I can clean off any small tail wag splatters and the paint looks brand new afterwards. We have lots of beams and stone, so have decided to go for a rustic but comfy look, but with a few rather French looking items, like a big French dresser in the dining room. Light walls in soft whites and creams, which don't clash too much with the different stone and woods types. I have tried other colours, but it just doesn`t really look right and ended up going back to the neutrals. These houses have low ceilings and small windows, so keeping light was an important issue for us. The colours come from the cushions, throws and soft furnishings in sage greens and warm purples. The dining room, looks stark but rustic and interesting. Currently would like to find a large rustic wood or antler chandelier for above the table. Floors downstairs are currently old school quarry tiles in half and wooden floors in the nest, with a cheeky bit of rhino vinyl floor in the main hall. The quarry tiles are original, but long term, I would love to rip up the wood/vinyl and add in flagged floors, so been bothering our suppliers about how well under floor heating may work with flag stones... :) Upstairs is thick underlay, as when they built houses in that day, they didn`t really worry about sound travel, then carpeted. Best move I have ever made!!! Even when things go wrong, I don`t really care, as I am renovating for the love of it this time, not for money! Exciting times!!...See MoreExtension Layout Advice - how would you use our space?!
Comments (10)Hi all, A few of you are right, there is currently a doorway from the hall into the playroom, but my husband didn't want two doors into that room! He thinks we won't use both but I have a feeling that, again, I should've stuck with my original idea of having both doors. So, thanks for your thoughts on this - I think we'll be keeping both doors! We did play with the idea of having the utility betwen the playroom and kitchen, or indeed the other side of the house (as you have done jonathanb1972) but the utility room wall is load bearing and because of other work we are having done, we are already having a lot of steels = costs! although it's is a great layout, we couldnt justify the extra expense of also moving soil pipe etc. I should've said that where the shower room will go is already a toilet so we'll just upgrade that. I am wondering now whether to move the french doors over to be near the dining area and have the lounge/living area more snug-like. As you can imagine my husband just wants me to stick with an idea so he can get on with things, but usually when I am not sure, it's because something isn't right - it's just a case of working out what that is, then ta-da! it all drops into place! I think it must be some sort of sixth sense or something, which can be annoying, but when it works, it's great!!...See MoreWhat would you call this piece of furniture?
Comments (13)Just came across this - lovely cabinet. Interesting to see as we recently had a similar cabinet made as a bespoke piece of furniture for a customer. Different style but similar principal - photos below. This one was made from solid elm wood and weighed a tonne! The customer referred to it as a 'larder cabinet' which seems as good a name as any....See MoreWhich layout would you go for?
Comments (4)Thanks Tani. Yes, the sofa we are considering get is quite deep, so think it's going to be better on the opposite wall. I think we'd prefer a regular sofa rather than a corner sofa, but I think once the work is done we'll mark the space out with tap to see how it feels. We'll probably have an ottoman rather than a coffee table so we can perch on that and guests on the sofa for additional seating. Regarding the light, we were living in the house for 6 months and had the couch in Opt 2 and there is about an hour of the late afternoon where the sun does hit that wall, but it's either going to be in our eyes or on the TV, so either way the curtains are going to be have to closed!...See MoreJoanna Biddolph
