West facing floor to ceiling glass doors - how to shade without blinds

Our house has 3m sliding patio doors opening onto 3m deep patio then longish garden. All pointing due west.

This time of year it gets a lot of sun in the evening resulting in glare & overheating. I don't particularly like blinds, so was thinking of something placed externally like an awning equivalent such as a shade sail (because I don't want to attach a traditional type awning to the house) . Does anyone have any experience of these or any alternatives?
