kitchen layout for main sink on island

The maximum length for the island is 2440mm, with the 4880mm wall of units including the cooker parallel to it. How would you prefer to arrange sink, dishwasher and prep area (and bin ideally)?

The kitchen is hand made shaker.

Hi,

From left to right we would normally have the Bin ,sink and then dishwasher with drainer grooves above the dishwasher. Most people prefer working from left to right when washing up, filling dishwashers etc. The positioning each side would really depend on the whole room layout as we would be looking to balance the design with the wall run, but with this space we would probably leave the majority of space to the left as it will give you a good prep area as well as allowing washing up to be stacked during dinner parties .

Hi there,

If at all possible we would suggest to not have the sink on the island. It is completely up to you, but we have found a lot of our clients like to have the sink against the wall. The sink area tends to be a bit messy with pots and pans waiting to be washed.

You could fit your tall cabinets, hob and sink area along the back wall and leave the island completely clear of appliances or the sink. As the island will be a nice size it will give you tons of prep area and when you have guests around it'll be a great social and serving area.

Dear Wombatchild The two double ovens are on that back wall. The distance from them to the end of the island is 2.6 mtrs. The bank of units is mirror imaged from the centre of the ovens and that means there are two slim pull out larder cupboards on that wall. That 2.6m means that they can be pulled out and it is still no problem for traffic to be flowing past. My hob is on the island itself and the extractor comes up through the granite when in use. That far end of the island is great for taking things out of the oven and checking on food ...... turning potatoes over etc... To the left of that bank of units is a door to my boot room so I need walk way space there. This thread is quite old now and I may be repeating something I typed earlier but I love my kitchen ( think it is about six years since I had it out in) ..... The only things I would have done differently would have been not to have stainless steel sinks as they are a devil to keep looking nice! And I would like more contemporary pendant lights over the island instead of those chrome chandeliers - can change them but still working on husband on that point!!!! X

Prep sink on an island is good for filling /emptying pans too - to avoid accidents don't put an obstacle, like pull down dishwasher for example, between them.

Oh, you sound so stressed! Other than the 3D rendering, I would recommend the old cardboard box trick to show how tight all the spaces are. Not only will you not be able to stand in front of your beautiful sleek drawers when you open them - you'll have to stand next to them - imagine coming in the door from the hall with a bag of shopping or your kids coming in with backpacks and then sliding through an 87 cm space. You need a lot more circulation space for a comfortable, working kitchen AND you won't be able to visually appreciate this island of your dreams where it is currently (as Jonathan said). Perhaps move the kitchen and island down in front of the internal bifold doors so you can see the island from a distance and gain more width and then have the seating at the end with the TV on the wall you already suggested, like this photo that J posted: Good luck!

@Damian Farrell, the induction hob I've had since... what.. July or August? I think? Not that long. Took a while to get used to it, having always cooked on gas. Advantages: very quick, easy to clean, you can let it automatically turn off after a certain time. Disadvantages: sometimes the pans make annoying noises, has something to do with the resonance of the magnetic field I think? I don't know. But it can be a bit annoying. Make:Schott-Ceran, but the downdraft is from a Dutch company called Airo Design. Don't think they export to other countries. Anyway, almost every company does them now. Bora gets good reviews, Miele, Siemens... The videos on youtube show that the steam goes down and you think, yeah... right... But it really does go down. It works just as good, if not better than a regular one that is over the hob. I'm happy with it.

I personally dislike the drainer grooves being above the dishwasher, because people end up stacking dirty dishes on the drainer....if the the drainer is to the right of the sink, I would have the dishwasher to the left of the sink. The bin directly below sink works well for scraping dishes, or if there's space I would put it to the left of the dishwasher again.
