Flooring for orangery through to kitchen

Any advice on what flooring to use...thinking of going for a grey colour...but do we go for slate tile, ceramic, porcelain, vinyl. It will be the same flooring from the orangery and in the kitchen.

Hi Catherine,

Difficult to advise without seeing a picture of the room.

Be careful of natural slate, its quite a soft material and will mark. Some slates are better than others so be careful who supplies.. Kirkstone supply a superb slate......http://www.kirkstone.com

Avoid ceramic if you can, its a thin coat of glaze over a pot tile. Chips easily.

Porcelain is a superb material, can look modern so if its a traditional interior it may not go. If its modern / contemporary think about using a fully vitrified porcelain. Very flat, has as nails and will take just about any amount of wear and tear. You can buy this in large slabs in a variety of finishes. Most tile suppliers stock this.

Word of warning with any ceramic / porcelain tiles. if your on a concrete floor happy days. If your on a timber floor you should invest in adding strengthening beams in to stop any flexing and ask the tiler to include an anti crack matting. The slightest movement on the floor will crack the tile so the floor has to be rigid..

I don't personally like vinyls, if you go down this road the only one on the market that I would recommend is Amtico..

Thank you...so helpful. The orangery is a new build with concrete floors....there will be a double door opening from the kitchen...and the kitchen has a timber floor...so thank you for that head's up about strengthening the beams etc

Thanks for replying and the images. I love the look of the last one on the first batch of images you posted (gorgeous pattern!) The walnut colour I seem to have for the floor stain looks nothing like this though. I've taken a few more pics (work in progress) with the bi-folds open. The rooms are quite a good size and fairly light even though the kitchen/diner is north facing. First pic is with the kitchen behind you (so peninsular in front) looking into the dining area. 2nd is showing the entrance to the lounge 3rd is from in the garden looking into the dining room & lounge. The kitchen does look good with a lighter floor but we are having white wash floors in the bedrooms so wanted a contrast downstairs. (Plus I couldn't imagine trying to keep a white kitchen floor clean! Eek)

Hi - Karndean and Amtico are similar. Both come out to about £40 per sq metre laid. If anything Amtico is slightly more expensive. The fitting cost will allow for levelling the floor which can be an issue if you have taken up floor tiles before and the floor is very uneven or if vinyl was glued down as all the adhesive has to be scraped off. If you decide on any wood effect strips make sure the line of the strips maximises the visual impression from front to back with the strips going front to back not side to side. Karndean is easy to clean but does scratch if you drag chairs across it. At the entrance door allow for a mat to avoid scratches from dirty shoes at the entrance. Karndean has loads of different contemporary wood options. Avoid choosing dark colours 'because it won't show the dirt'. Choose a colour that creates a feeling of space - dark colours never do that.

Update: We have the new glass roof which is made of the 1.0 u value glass, we don't know the u-vlaue of the other glass windows and we haven't added curtains or any of the other things we said we would do yet (though we discovered the walls already have insulation), but I am happy to say we have noticed a positive change. We still have doors and walls between the conservatory and the kitchen, but since putting in the new roof the temperature difference between the conservatory and the kitchen has gone from aprox 7 degrees Celsius to 2 degrees. Hopefully it will improve with furniture, cork flooring etc. GOod luck with your project. K

At least two-thirds of our projects involve opening up the existing living area of a property through to an orangery that includes a kitchen/dining area. When doing so there are two key factors to consider; 1. Natural Light - It's essential to have the right size lantern in the new room but also so that it throws back enough light into the existing room otherwise it could be like the 'black hole of Calcutta!' 2. Going for a contemporary look...thinking about Terra tiles. I have oak flooring in the other reception rooms...so was thinking of something contrasting to go down the passageway, kitchen and out into the orangery

Hi Catherine,

If you use a tile the joint between the concrete floor and the timber floor "will" crack. Your tiler definitely need an anti crack barrier under this.

Depending on the overall surface area you may need an expansion strip, if thats the case put it in the doorway between the two rooms so this will allow expansion and will solve the crack problem as these strips are runner. I you ask your tiler he should know all about this.

If there is movement / wag on the kitchen floor ask the builder if he can add "cross braces between the joists to stiffen it up. You can check for movement by two of you standing in the middle of the room and jumping up and down, sounds like a sketch from Monty Python I know but its the best way. Watch the floor and see if it deflects..
