Another exterior transformation required!

We've just bought a house which whilst isn't 'ugly' it's a bit awkward looking. We're planning a two storey extension in near future on side or rear but wondered whether this could include even-ing up the front facade to make it more aesthetically pleasing and proportioned.

I think a smaller hipped roof house has been extended to give sloping roof and porthole window to front but it just looks lop sided and makes the rooms on this side of the house compromised in size and roof height.
I'm wondering whether I can get an extension and put some money into making it prettier with more kerb side appeal. An architect will be involved along with needing planning permission and removal of some large trees, but I don't know where to start with ideas!

Its a good idea to consider the house and the immediate exterior space as a whole and also to consider what the medium to long term plan will be in order to avoid the finished project becoming too disjointed. A lot depends on your budget, but smartening up the exterior facade, improving the entrance and side area and also considering how you want to use the space inside and out should all come into the equation. Also spend some time observing how the natural light moves around the house.

I like your house. I think LMW design is right - there is the house and the surrounding grounds that could be improved to compliment the house more. If it were my home, I would want a fully integrated plan that cover not only the exterior but also the interior and the grounds too.

Sounds like a plan, Tino. I really like that umbrella picture, and am looking forward to seeing where you put it. I also really like that red lamp. Just off the top of my head I don't think that its too much red, since your rug only has the slim red circle, and the couch has the red throw adding color. However, since you are the one there in the space you are the only one who can judge whether it too much color, or not. I'm glad that you think my ideas have been helpful-and, of course, I have a lot of company out here with a lot of good ideas, and design experience in a lot of cases.

From what I understand, an ensuite is OK in a one bed flat as long as there is a window or mechanical extraction, and a fire alarm. A shared kitchen/living room is OK: there may be a minimum size requirement. As the proposed bedroom in this case has a window on the ground floor there shouldn’t be a problem with fire regs (assuming it’s big enough to get through) - but ideally these should be checked with the local building regs office/ friendly fire officer before work begins.
