Is tv mounted above a tall stove/fireplace too high

Thinking of putting in a tall stove wood burner, built in to our fireplace in the sunroom but we only have place for a TV above the fireplace. Most tall burners are free standing but we already have our fireplace wall built on our new house... Has anyone else done this as we are worried the tv will end up too high especially after a mantle is set in to?? Confused..??

Hi Laura,

Would you be able to supply some pictures so that we can see what situation you're in.

In terms of the distance between the stove and the TV, that would be dependant on the manufacturers installation instructions, some stoves require 500mm to combustibles, so dependant on the size of your TV it would be touching the ceiling!

In our experience, homeowners tend to regret installing TVs above stoves. We are aware of several TVS that have 'warped' from the intense heat produced. We always advise people to reconsider!

Hi - we have been installing TVs above fireplaces for the past 15 years. Our recommendation is that you should leave at 50-100cm clearance from the top of the fireplace to the bottom of the TV and fit a protuding mantelpiece to deflect/minimise the effect of heat thermals. The picture shown shows us a example of a badly installed TV where no thought has been put into the interior design of that element in the room. I can almost guarantee a Technology Advisor was not involved in the project as they would have found a better solution for the finish. Sometime the area above the fireplace is the only space in the room the TV can go, and when its property thought out it can work.

Have a really level headed think about this: as a focal point it's the first thing you and everyone else is going to see the moment they walk into the room. (Mother-in-law springs to mind!) If your tv is your most valuable asset, then go ahead and make a feature of it! If not, then play about with alternatives: a picture, bookshelves, wall art, a couple of sconces either side of the fireplace. Having looked again at your photo, it is tricky. I always seek to hide my tv, preferably in a cupboard but that's because I'm not very technical. Perhaps a cubby hole chiselled into the wall over the fireplace, hidden by a picture!

Hello again, Jayk. The disagreement was about the value of fireplaces. I love them; you don't! I only discovered I loved them when I got one - this is the first home in which I've had one and up till now I've thought they were a pain, assuming they should be the focus of a room without my permission. But we agree on the technology side. It is unbelievable, isn't it, that something that we use every day (most of us, anyway) such as a television should be so prescriptively ugly. You'd think they could come up with something better that suits enough of us to be a financial success for the technology company. The way southernpointofview has fitted those two televisions in is impressive but I don't have that sort of furniture. I want a discreet wall-mounted television on an arm so I can swing it out and back. Sounds simple ...

I agree with The Snug Ltd - Not only do T.V's above a fireplace ruin the focal point of the fireplace for me, it's just too hot. I found this interesting article which when read through explains why:- Digital Trends . I'm sure that the room can't be so small that it won't fit a small t.v on a little cabinet at the right height. We have one in our snug which rarely gets turned on, except for when the grandchildren come round. We watch TV in the lounge where it sits adjacent to the much larger fireplace. We did buy a larger T.V at one point, but took it back and changed it for a smaller one as it just dominated the room, and detracted from the Fireplace!
