Front Door colour scheme

I have just applied undercoat and ready to do the front door which I'll be using 'Slate Grey'.

I was going to do the pillars and back of these and above the door in 'Ash Grey' but having found this site, would like to know your ideas for the Pillars and back/above. I don't want the front to stand out too much but be more heritage style. I will maybe brighten it up with new blinds, which I need to decide on the colour for.

We have UPVC at the back of our property, but sash style and I don't like them, but after spending 20k on the front they'll do. Your units have blown which is why they're cloudy and you can just have the units replaced. The windows at the front look like the cheapest nastiest Windows you can get! Can I recommend you clean the brick arch over the door as that seem to have disappeared. Do NOT use any brick acid or harsh chemicals to clean it and use a small wire brush or brass brush on the mortar joints to gently get back to clean lime mortar. That arch is a great feature and will look stunning with the door and maybe the arch over the ally as well before you finish your painting!!!

It looks like your door is the kerb appeal to your house. The frame is a statement piece on its own and personally I think you should high light all the detail with James White and your door in the slate grey and both will become statements without competing against one another. Those windows are awful "sorry", but if you replaced them at some point with sliding sash the front would look beautiful.

Thanks for your reply. So I should not use the Ash White and do the Pillars and back with the James White, or just the Pillars in that and the behind in Ash White? I know what you mean about the windows and will be changing them at some point.

No problem. Sounds like you have some ideas to look at. Contemporary would work well and you can easily add a few industrial twists where blank and greys are concerned!! If you do consider changing things like French doors or windows as well.. I would ask you to consider having 3D visual model drawn up to show you the options. I find this helps many of my clients with exterior decisions. I would never buy a car or even a lipstick without seeing it first so this package allows you to see expensive items like windows and doors before committing. I have attached an example. Hi Moores, I think sky is the limit given the white render, so maybe pick a bold colour you have used as an accent in the interior and really make a feature of the entrance?? I am one of those who ended up painting our front door the dark obvious choice, but I had a busy and quite a dark brick exterior to contend with, and I just couldn't imagine myself living with nothing too jazzy against it. I did try though ) Which way does your home faces? and can you attach a picture ? Is the door design of the 20's period? Sorry for many questions

If you are brave enough, do all the walls! It will give the room a cosy, cocooning feel. If not, do the fireplace wall the dark green (left or the middle colour) and the rest of the walls a very pale green with a bit of yellow. Having two tones of green will be more a soothing effect than stark white against the strong green, and interestingly, most won't notice. If the Little Greene colour was either Tea with Florence/Goblin/Harley Green it would suit the 1930's vibe perfectly, and Green Stone - light would be a good pairing.

Also re: the windows, I'm guessing it would be okay to leave the back ones as is? The problem with the kitchen and top landing one, is that they are both suffering from condensation within the double glazing.

It's entirely upto you which colour you choose. I've used about 15 bloody litres of James White on my house so far and still loads to go. It's a really nice subtle off white which I thought would be compliment the lime mortar in he brick work as well. I've use Johnson professional storm guard gloss on all my external wood work and normal inside. Very good paint and they'll mix any Farrell and Ball colour. It's going to look good when it's done and you'll enjoy using the door just because it's so pretty. Someone might suggest different colours, but I like your scheme.

I'll give the Ash White a go and if it can be improved I'll happily change it. I seems to be an off white so hopefully it should look ok. :)

I'll probably just replace the units at the back. Yes, those windows aren't very good but there's been a fair few other things that needed sorting out. Definitely will be replacing as soon as I can.

Re: the arch. Do you mean I should remove the undercoat and return it to brick? It was painted white beforehand so never seen it without paint on it. Also, what would you suggest to remove the paint please? Just the brush or is there some kind of chemical?

I too would have said to use a nice off white (grey undertones) for the pillars and back (same colour) to give it it's own identity and not give that flat look that's appearing in your photo. I look forward to seeing it finished. All the best, Gina

No no no, not the bricks within the arch, but the arch it's self. Leave the infill as it is because thats helping the look of the door, it's the actual brick arch, it's a very neat cut arch and with the very thin mortar joints showing the cream lime mortar and the arch bricks cleaned enough for a contrast between the main brickwork and the detailed arch will really make your front door a noticeable feature.

Ah okay. So basically the door arch and alley one need a thorough tidying up. Will do that soon. Is there a special cleaner for the brick work?

I've just done the door in Slate Grey and the rest in Ash white. Will give them another coat tomorrow hopefully. There is some damage to the wood above the door so need to get some filler for that.
