Kitchen floor tile colour advice

Dear Readers,

Please can you help?

We have a NW facing dining kitchen, with handleless white gloss units and a laminate work top in black Quartz effect which has flecks of silver/light grey in the kitchen area.

We have sourced a porcelain tile for the floor which is available in either Taupe or light grey. Which colour should we go for? The floor will adjoin the hallway which will be in a light oak. We have a dark wood table in the dining room.

Advice gratefully received!

Hi. The taupe tile sounds as if it could potentially be warmer and also tone in with the oak better but why not post a pic of the tiles and floor?

Thanks. I think you are right re: the Taupe. I think the grey is going to be too cool in our space.

Many thanks to everyone! After seeing them again and laying in a right way I decided to keep then. And of course go for Cooacabana with more black in it with wavy pattern (rather than linear). These tiles cost me £17 per sqm and are a bargain for the quality that they are (getting them from abroad). Apart from the pattern they are very white which overall would keep the floor colour white.

Hello Ruby Gosh those samples look gorgeous. If your connected rooms have grey oak engineered flooring why are you considering anything else? Many kitchens do well with engineered wood flooring. It depends on how much 'spillage' you are likely to get on your floor but in most households now there is little water that gets on the floor. The only other consideration is fat.... if you fry a lot fat splashes will affect a wooden floor. If you think your lifestyle will be amenable to it do consider taking your lovely grey wooden floor right through into the kitchen - it is warm underfoot and will make it feel very connected to the rest of the house. Thanks @Sonia. Good shout. We did think about extending the parquet floor but i fear we will be unable to get a decent match - the existing floor has been down for about 60 years and has been sanded and treated a number of times so it has a fairly unique character. Really appreciate the suggestion. Wil give it some more thought.

Hi, its a really nice space I know you mentioned you like the country style, you could incoporporate some wooden paneling similar to the image below for your wall and backsplash as it give a rustic vibe. Alternativly sage green tiles would lokk really nice and still keep the space feeling bright. I think a sage green would work really well with your white units and soften the black cooker (Ive added an image below). It would also work with either the grey floor you currently have or the beige travestine tiles if you did decide to continue them from your hallway. You could then add some sage accents like a clock, lights etc to bring the scheme together (taking inspiration from the below image.) And adding a plant maybe a Fern in a rustic pot will bring the country vibe into your space. Im not sure what your current units are made from but you could look into pianting some of the units to bring the colour scheme together. Hope this helps Louise

Hi cj73. I agree with @minnie101 that the taupe sounds good but do check the colours before ordering. Sometimes two brown tones together look awful so get samples of both the grey and the taupe coloured tiles and lay them down on your wooden floor to see which looks best. Look at them in daylight and in artificial light. The tiles will need to be grouted so that is another colour decision you need to take. If you can get samples of the grout colours while you are considering the tiles it will be very useful at this stage to try a few options out.
