Help! Rented apartment in need of tlc!

My daughter has moved to the USA on a one year work placement. The apartment is quite dark and she's struggling to make it more homely on a very tight budget. None of the furniture in the photos can be replaced. Any ideas?

Hi. If she's able to find a junk shop or eBay find I'd add a large decorative mirror behind the sofa which will bounce light and create a feature. Are the sofas worn or dirty? If not, I'd drape the throws over the arms, you can also add a pale green cushion on that side to add a bit more colour and put the cream cushion in front of the coral. A cheap idea for the coffee table is to add piles of books and flowers ( can go faux if wanted) with perhaps an ornament or 2 on 1/2 of the books. I'd try the plant in front of the tv sockets and add a tall onament in that gap in the wall. I'd also add a taller ornament to the left of the tv on the mantle. What type of fire is it? Can she paint the room at all, maybe the chimney breast? It's not a bad room at all, the only thing I would do if in budget is to take the tv off the wall

Thank you for those excellent tips. I don't know why the question has appeared so many times though!! The fire won't be used - I don't know what type it is. Love the ideas for the coffee table. I'm off out now to try and get done stuff to follow through o. Your suggestions so thanks again

Congratulations on getting such a beautiful first apartment. I'd definitely start with a sofa and 2 chairs, and NOT a loveseat! A lot of us houzzers are anti-loveseat. Two chairs offer so much more flexibility than a loveseat. I'd place the sofa on the wall opposite the fireplace. The two chairs would go in the window with a small table between them. You said you wanted a "big old sofa". I hope that was just a figure of speech as what I think you'd be far better off with is a sofa that is of a nice size, but not too big. I'd look for one with skinny arms so that you have more seating space which is what a sofa is for, after all! A sofa that is 84" long will fit in most homes nicely. Watch the depth of the sofa too as lots of them have gotten far too deep. I'd go 39" deep max. Remember that this is your first apartment, but not your last so stick with pieces that aren't too big. Pay attention to the size of the chairs also. I'd stay under 35" wide, and again with narrow arms. My recommendation would be solid fabrics for both the sofa and the chairs. You can have fun with pattern when you get around to a rug and pillows. You'll also need a coffee table, plus a table to go between the two chairs. I adore the faceted mirror table from West Elm below and would make it a must have. The coffee table below with the marble top is lovely as long as you don't spill red wine on it! I agree with OnePlan, white sounds like a good option in this room. It can sometimes seem to be a bit cold, so i would probably go for a painted look rather than gloss finish and maybe warm it through with wood worktops (there are some excellent wood effect laminate worktops - take a look at the Duropal worktop range - these also come with an antibac finish, are very good with stains etc..) Yes agreed its very daunting - and you'll never get it spot on first time. I've only lived in my house 2.5 years and this is the 3rd time i've completely changed the lounge, the kitchen has been done twice, and the bedrooms twice also :) My latest inspiration for the lounge was a Tom Ford showroom, so i typed "tom ford interiors" into google and saw the pictures, that became the template and i just research the internet for similar items. Another great look for your place could be scandinavian design which is very bright and airy, there are a lot of pictures on this site if you type "scandinavian" in, and also these websites specialise in scandi accessories: www.scandinaviandesigncenter.com and www.finnishdesignshop.com . Just list out all the elements that will need to be looked and and work through them methodically: 1) layout, spacing and sizing of furniture, to include rugs 2) overall colour theme (2 or 3), to include furniture, carpets / rugs any wallcoverings and curtains / blinds) 3) lighting (yours looks good already) 4) accessories and decor 5) textiles such as cushions and throws keep the darker colours lower down if you want to place to look light and airy (such as rugs etc rather than painting walls dark colour) and use lots of mirrors if you want to add the illusion of space. But the number 1 tip from me is find a picture of a room you like and simply copy of much of it as you can.

Houzz quite often has some funny moments! If the mirror is out of budget then you can prop some art on the bookcase assuming you can't fit anything to the wall or if you manage to find a large lightweight piece of art (2/3 of sofa width) then you could use those adhesive pads. Perhaps a couple of plants for the patio too in colourful pots? Good luck!

Hi, It doesn't look from the pictures that there are many lights, perhaps find some interesting up-lighters, which will add character and give you more light
