Large Victorian Living room revamp required

We have very large, high ceilinged (& one side corniced) lounge area, looking very tired from a paint of Egyptian Cotton 8 years ago - I'd love to inject some elegant colour into the room but my husband's pretty scared of colour and we can never agree, so it just gets left. I'd love the opportunity to have a colour makeover and bring this lovely room back to its best!

This sounds like a great space
with lovely tall ceilings! I’d recommend
having a look at our Dulux Heritage range of paint –this has colour palettes
specifically selected to complement the character and style of traditional
period properties, such as yours.

In terms of colour, I’d suggest
Dulux Country Sky, which is a gorgeous, soft grey-blue. Go for a flat matt
finish of paint to give that effortlessly classic look you are after. I think this
would be a great choice for you and your husband, as it will add a hint of
elegant colour, without being too overpowering.

Holly, not a bad dialema and what great spaces you have to play with! There are so many options for you here. I have worked on these type of properties for over 9 years and I always provide the same advice to a client. You will need to consider how you want to use the space/the environment that you want to create in order to determine where you will place the furniture. Key elements such as how you intend to travel through the property, what is practical for you, how your family spend their time at home etc. will all dictate the interior configuration. For example, some of my clients would look to create a formal reception room at the front of the property, introducing a door from the hallway. They would then utilise the second reception room as a play/TV area, library, piano space or even insert the kitchen within this zone and create a very large open plan dining/entertainment space (large sofa/TV area) at the rear, directly connected to the garden. As you can see there are so many points to consider. Have you thought about appointing a team to assist you with the space planning/visualising how it could look?

Hi. I think it's going to echo until you get some soft furnishings in there. Rug/s, cushions, a throw for the arm of the sofa and curtains (keep them fairly light). A mirror/s will bounce the light as will any reflective accessory, light or piece of furniture. Floor and table lamps will add cosiness, as do plants and books plus different textures for your accessories, When you hang Art, hang it just a few inches above the sofa or dining table so the centre of the art is at eye level, it will connect with the furniture and make it feel cosier. Do add 1/2 pieces of taller things to mix up the scale such as a floor lamp or piece of furniture.

I clicked on the company that did this work and they have clearly done some amazing things on other projects. However, I do share the reservations about this one. The symmetry and balance has been lost by exposing the eave and the solid fronted cabinets prevent books or anything personal from being displayed. Additionally, it’s off white walls, off whites sofas and a white fireplace. Doesn’t feel very personal

Hi! I think you've got a really good starting point for a sophisticated modern look here, however I'd definitely say things feel a bit washed out looking at the images you've posted. I'd probably start off by adding a few layers of texture to the space, whether that be through throws, or maybe some extra cushions across the sofa. A splash of colour on the curtains could also make a big difference, giving a vibrant pop to the space. If you'd be willing to go a little bolder, a statement lamp might be able to revamp the room, giving a unique focal point to the decor for an unusual, personalised style! Hi -- it's great that you have a high-ceilinged room; it would really be an idea to consider re-instating the cornicing all round, which really gives the room balance. Cornicing is surprisingly cost-effective, and together with a good skirting board is very effective. You could either have cornicing made to match the existing, or choose a new one for the whole room; it doesn't have to be very ornate. Having the bones of the room done well means that you can use a variety of styles of furniture and it will look good!

In terms of colour; consider which fabrics you will use-- it is relatively easy to pick a paint colour to team with a fabric, much harder the other way round!

Hi. I would also reinstate the cornicing if you can. Photos will definitely help to see the colour of sofas, curtains, floor etc otherwise it's very hard to suggest a colour. Also which way does the room face?
