I have a kitchen design problem

I am designing a "1 wall with island" kitchen, and I wish to incorporate 1 m of tall full depth pantry cupboards on the wall butted up to a corner. I am tempted to use two sets of 50cm wide pull out drawers, but am concerned that the corner might interfere with their function.

Can anyone suggest which type of tall pullout would be most functional for this width, taking into account the location at the end of the run in the corner?

I would suggest that you have 50cm tall units with internal pull out shelves/drawers as otherwise it is difficult to access. Also you must ensure you have a filler at each end of at least 50mm, this will allow the door to open and not clash with the wall. Hello furlottia, I agree you need someone who is not standard, who is highly creative and thinks outside the box, that can give you a lot of ideas and create something fabulous within your given budget.. It is an absolute must when considering a fantastic and interesting kitchen that is refreshing to look at for as long as you have it.. Ideally you want someone who can design with all the fundamentals in mind.. So that means procurement... appliances- what and for where, fixtures, finishes and the interior aesthetic along with it.. flooring, windows et al.. Someone who considers the space and what would sit right within the home and someone who can understand exactly how you use the space and what you want from your kitchen... Basically someone who can do everything for you in terms of the design, style and procurement- but the work itself! For that, you then need a fabulous fitter! Who is also a god at fitting! :))

Thank you so much Jonathan for taking time to draw something out. Your alternative is close to a path we did consider, but the cooker is dual fuel and moving the gas to the r/h side now is a no-no. Moreover, the external wall is on the left side (as you look at the picture) and this is where the extractor must go given the way the beams run. Practical considerations eh! Re Independent help. I agree, and we have gone down this path (with independent shops), but all the designs presented so far have been...uninspired. Just to be absolutely clear, as I think my sketch is a little confusing, in my own example there are no units proposed down the right hand side; just a f/f at the nearest end. In this respect, I'm not quite sure where the space saving would be between your own and mine, but I'm likely just being a bit dense? (Do ignore the circle on the end of the "G"; that was a draft suggestion from my wife which I didn't erase from my sketch!) Many thanks again.

For such a large project I would be engaging an architect - brief them about what you want and need rather than trying to produce a whole design yourself. Keep an open mind because they might come up with a different solution to meet your brief. But to respond to the design itself, just a few quick thoughts: where do the stairs go up - have you allowed space for that on the ground floor? Judging by the measurements on the two plans, it looks like you're planning to move walls, but only ever so slightly. Bear in mind that many of the walls downstairs will be supporting walls for the rest of the house. Where possible, keep them in place except for where you are really opening up the space. There's usually no point moving a supporting wall to gain a few centimetres. Unfortunately moving drainage to resite toilets is expensive - just a heads up on that really, as it will add to costs. But my absolute number one recommendation is that you get an architect.

Would tall units with internal pullout drawers be easier to access than a double door larder cupboard with shelves?

Regarding the kitchen design, I am going with painted wood. The existing (but repurposed kitchen/dining) room is 6300mm x 4880mm so I am planning a 4880mm run along the only wall which has no windows or doors, with a 1800mm x 900mm island. I would prefer no cooktop or sink on the island. Their will be an antique mahogony dining table 6ft x 4ft which has been in our family for generations on the other side of the island.

The main run of units is on an internal wall on the other side of which is the main bedroom, so I am a bit concerned that the noise of the fridge will be transmitted into the bedroom. Can I do something to reduce this risk?

Hi

A double doored larder would be the best solution I think, you could then still have a couple of internal drawers and even a worktop, to make it more like a chefs pantry.

Regarding the fridge noise, they are much quieter now than they once were, but you might think about some sound proofing on the wall or inside the wall if possible.
