Hi, there is no opacity feature in this window, it is just the brightness of the sky that is causing this affect! They are normal Velux windows.

You can customize the glass too. With a diffused white Lami as example and loE.

Hello mrjohnnyd & Sarah W, You're right to think about overheating. It's a huge consideration for home extensions as skylights in a pitch roof for example, add up 40% more light than vertical windows - so yes, they will generate more heat too. There are a few things you can think about to mitigate solar gain in the hotter months: * Internal/external blinds to prevent solar gain. This is the most pocket friendly option * Opt for a glazing that will reflect UV rays * Choose skylights that will open and close, of course. There are slide open and hinged options, and roof lanterns that have opening panes. It's a good job you'll have vertical windows. As you mentioned you can throw them and your upstairs windows open once summer arrives to create a chimney effect. We will have a 2.8m ceiling and Westin have advised their Stratus ceiling extractor would work - in fact they don't set a height limit just say it should be set at the highest point in the room. Might work for you? We also have two skylights but our other one runs the other way so as to best allow light into the internal seating area (where your utility is) - so ours won't match at all! if you want symmetry though, why not push your other one over to the side as well- wouldmake lighting the dining table easier!
