Chimney Breast Decoration

I have a chimney breast feature in the living room and I would like to make it a stand out feature and want to build the look of the living room around this. I love the stone and wood effect looks but I haven't been able to find any advice on how to practically execute this! I asked our joiner about it and he said you would need to put the tiling round the entire chimney breast (including sides) and then the corners could be potentially hazardous. If that's the case can anyone advise what they did if they tiled a fireplace? Or is there a different material that i could use? Any advice would be great!!

The first pic is of my fireplace but the hole will be filled and the light will also be removed. I will be putting my TV on there and a ribbon fireplace. The other pics are ones I love!

I tried to post before but the comment has disappeared. Hopefully I don't duplicate this for you.
I just wanted to show you my bathroom external corner. There is no ugly trim and as it's just next to the shower it gets brushed past often, and no sharp edges.
The tiles are natural stone. And the edges have been mitred.
You just need a good experienced tiler and probably natural stone tiles. These can mitred and any small variations along the corner will not be noticeable. Porcelain/ceramic cut edges can often chip and can be sharp. And you might see the cut edge because of the change in the material from the glaze to plain tile base.

Hi, I painted the fireplace grey and the same colour as your walls, to show you...My reasoning for painting it the same as your walls is that you will probably have the door in white or possibly another colour, which makes it quite a stand out feature. That's one. And then you will add furniture to the room too, maybe a rug, curtains... so you'll be adding a lot of different colours anyway. So I'd keep the rest fairly calm. And I really don't think that the blue fireplace makes it less of a feature. But there we are. It's up to you :-)

Tbh I’m not sure on this one! I like your living room as is, the inchyra is a strong colour, just the chimney breast, id say no, the whole wall and the fire place surround done in deep cloth....possibly but it will make that whole wall feel heavier and you focus will automatically go to it I feel, for super dramatic, the whole room inchyra, the fireplace and all associated wood work in deep cloth.....I’d probably go for it tbh! Sort of in for a penny, in for a pound.

Lol... I'm a bit too impressed by both of your fabulous tastes, so I'm rather hesitant to throw my idea of accessories in the mix, but hey ho... I'll have look at some ideas anyway :-)

Just like tiling a bathroom- the tiler would use a metal or plastic edging on the corners. Have you considered just getting a quality wallpaper? Also, how old is your house? I think the tiles might look ok in a modern place but if it's a period house, they probably look a bit weird.

If it's def the tiled look you want there really is no alternative. Very very simple to achieve.

A tiler isn't essential but is recommended unless your good with a hacksaw and have an electric tile cutter.

You will require a tile edge bead (see picture)

Check the insurance for installing a TV above a fireplace. Often it's an issue with the wall being the chimney and heat and fire risk.

i never suggest a client does this configuration as I worry that it could fall off the wall

Hi Claire, there are cladding bricks that you can use especially for the type of chimney covering you like in your photo. I understand what your builder says about the corners, but these little bricks also come with special edges for around the corners (these have a little curved hook at one end). This cladding creates a beautiful effect and most important, they don't give a 'clumpy' look.

jprzym - our house is only 20 years old and is a modern bungalow. We are completely renovating the entire house so hoping to have a rather contemporary finish so this should work well with the overall look. I have looked in to wallpaper but I am not a fan of the wood/tile effect wallpapers thus far. I have a sample for a rough textured wallpaper that I don't mind.. but not in love with!

sttop - really helpful to see the corner finish - and for assurance with practicality! I think perhaps getting a tiler in would be the best thing to do.

Redecorate - there is some worries around this - the "chimney breast" we have isn't actually a real chimney breast, it's just been built out - would this make damage even more likely? I'll definitely check it out. I probably would only use the fireplace for decoration though!
