Hive or Nest or Honeywell or a different one altogether ???

Hi, I'm currently looking at the different digital and wireless thermostats and seen that there are so many on the market. But it only seems appropriate to Question which one is the better one of the lot? and also cost effective?

I've read lots of reviews on Hive and Nest but there's so many more I haven't touched on so looking for advice from someone whose used a digital and wireless one or just recommendations.

I'm building a new house and I've specified some Smart Home technologies - mostly for the lighting and blinds, which together can help give that lived-in look when nobody is home. I chose industry-standard technologies (DALI and KNX) so that nothing is tied to one manufacturer (who could go out of business or decide to stop making / supporting something) and there's no single central 'brain' which would cause chaos if it fails. I agree completely on the 'open technology' point - it's nice to have an app on your phone but it's not nice to have 10 separate apps because you bought things from 10 different companies, so you want everything controllable from one place and you want the labour-saving automation of one system talking directly to another (e.g. "I've just set the intruder alarm, so nobody's home, so turn down the ventilation system"). I'd also say it's worth making a judgment on where technology is changing most and not to invest a lot in something that's likely to become out of date quickly. For example, you can pay a lot of money for fancy KNX light switches but a cheap tablet will be more flexible, and voice control with Siri and Alexa is close to being mainstream.

Communitec, well I for one would like to put in a full electronic home security system with motion activated cameras so if there is an alarm I can view everything on my phone but my house has concrete walls and ceilings so potential installers all want to leave all cables on the surface - even wifi systems require power cables or new batteries way too often. For the same reason the rear speakers for my theatre system are in front with the other speakers - apart from cables to run the wall behind is a glass block feature wall. As for veering off topic goes, well I see people commenting on the appearance of things like thermostats and what functions they have as well as a lot on their aesthetics, so lighting, switches, sockets and control interfaces are on topic really. The fact that a lot of people simply accept these items without thought just goes to show how today's new tech becomes tomorrow's standard and expected items. Where we locate things has changed a lot due to changes in usage patterns and acceptance of items in different settings - phones are rarely in hallways now for example, even though that was a standard location up to the 1970s (and are disappearing in favour of hand phones). My computer always used to be in a room used as an office but I'm typing this on front of the TV on my notebook (no more PC) - tech evolving to suit environment or attitudes evolving to allow tech into what were exclusion zones or perhaps a mixture of the two?

It’s two years now since I first posted about ideas for redesigning our garden and now that it’s really looking ‘established’, I thought I’d post an update. I also wanted to say a huge ‘thank you’ to those who responded with ideas & inspiration, particularly @rachelmidlands & @jonathan for their plans which I incorporated into our design. We love our ‘new’ garden and feel especially grateful & fortunate at the moment to have our outdoor space.

We've got a nest so I can only really comment on that.

Pro's are it looks great and the phone app interface is brilliant - much better for turning it on/off up/down from anywhere (I particularly enjoy that, when we've been out and wouldn't otherwise know when to set it to come on, I can just go on my phone when we're 15 minutes away and have a toasty home waiting).

For us the downside is that in some ways we don't actually want or need a 'learning' thermostat. It tends to have a bit of a life of its own and is a bit difficult to set up to only come on at certain times (more like a traditional one). I think if we were a larger family that comes and goes at different times it would be better.

The other problem for us is that we have a wood burning stove in the living room which confuses the thermostat. We ended up putting a door back on the living room and relocating the nest to the hallway to make the readings more accurate.

I haven't looked into the Hive system recently but from what I remember you can buy multiple units to monitor and control individual rooms/spaces? For us this might have made more sense so we could for example have the bedroom's on separate timers and temperatures to the communal spaces. Not sure if I'm recalling that correctly though.
