How is the timber worktop supported?

sorry if this sounds naive but I have only come across this cantilevered timber worktop once more and I am curious as to how this is achieved,

Hi that isn't a naïve question at all. The bartop is screwed in place from inside the island so nothing is visible. Hope that helps and best regards, Mark

I was told to drill large bolts from underneath and also bond it with glue. I decided that people would probably lean on it and it might not last and end up looking awful. Also if I ever removed it I would be left with holes in the worktop so opted for the granite to extended over the end to make a breakfast bar instead. It works better because I get a larger island top to work on.

Yes, you're definitely looking at legs for that distance. obviously the join will be the weakest point so make sure this is well supported too. Look at the moisture content for kiln dried wood, this is what most wooden tops are to prevent warping and movement in the future. If possible, bring the wood inside the house at least a week beforehand and leave it flat somewhere so it can acclimatise before fixing. good luck

There are some repair kits online for laminate floors but laminate worktops are pretty difficult to damage and if your is damaged maybes it’s at the end of its life and it’s time to replace if. You can see an inexpensive range at DIY stores or go to a timber merchants for a better product.

We did this in our previous house (in US) - they builders built a steel frame and routed it into the chipboard/MDF/whatever goes under the actual worktop. It allowed an overhang of 450mm on both sides. It was a total bugger for them to do though and they didn't enjoy doing it. In UK (and probably in US too I expect), everyone's told me max of 300mm for an overhang so we'll stick to that this time I think.
