We have these huge rustic bowls and would welcome any suggestions regarding sealing/viablility as basins for a project

You could try dipping them in resin and coating them a few times, but I know resin scratches easily, so you will need to find a way to re-polish it or buff out the scratches occasionally. Also if you go down this route, ensure the resin in UV protected as it turns a nasty yellow over time...

Some of the joinery companies I have worked with have excellent craftsmen who would know what to do with them and how to waterproof them. You could search Houzz for a carpenter or joiner / craftsman who knows his stuff in this department.

I also know there are lots of chemical products like Ronseal who have products for tiles in bathrooms and floors so you might want to give a company like that a call too and ask them what the would suggest. Australia & the USA have lots of products, easily available. I think that the law over here might stop the availability of them though, so always double check if it is legal in the UK when importing or buying off e-bay.

Also research how timber boats are protected, as I know there are varnishes that will resist water for a few years and then you just have to maintain it after that.

If you are really creative you could line the interior with a metal and keep the outside rustic - it would create a gorgeous sleek and refined bowl with the raw and rustic exterior.

Ive designed non standard sinks for client's before and the only issue I would look out for is finding a nice basin waste and trap if it is exposed. In the UK you will need to provide an overflow (which I think are totally ugly) so to overcome that I put a floor gully and created a "wet room" instead so that if someone forgot to turn off the tap the water could still drain away. There are wastes like some click clack ones that don't close completely so they allow the water to leak out - so that could be an alternative to an overflow too.

Don't give up, persist until you find the perfect product and keep asking joinery companies, potters or bathroom companies for products that they know of. I think this is a great project.

The bowls are so pretty, I would love to see photos of the finished product!
