Deck
I'm in the conceptual stages of redesigning and adding on to a 1960's MCM. Would you be interested in giving an opinion on the general look?

So, as I mentioned before I'm adding an addition on and renovating what is there. The current home is a 1960's MCM ranch that has features you would recognize from Eichler or maybe Frank Lloyd Wright. Unfortunately the home is to very dated (falling apart) and too small for our family. I've come up with a concept to add on but there's a couple things I'm concerned with about my design:
1. It's a low mono-pitch roof, while the rest of the home is low-pitch gables and flat roofs.
2. I've included a large wall of uninterrupted glass on the south side of the addition and I'm concerned that It's too uninteresting or just too much. The rest of the house has a lot of detail and although there's a lot of glass throughout, there's nothing quite like this.
3. I'm not confident about the type of windows I've chosen or how I've arranged the windows. I know they shouldn't be perfectly symmetrical in relation to one another but... I'd be very grateful for your thoughts or ideas!

Comments (13)Filling it up with very small gravel might help (not a cheap option, though!), and encasing the underside and gaps in a couple of layers of very fine mesh (you can buy Mouse Mesh), at least against the larger unwelcome visitors (rats and foxes), but you will have to resign yourself to probably having mice, I'm afraid. As previously stated on this thread, ensure you keep all food scraps etc out of the garden (unfortunately bird feeders etc will contribute, make sure you clean up the ground below them daily), and keep the area clean and tidy. If you do find mice or rats, call the council immediately and they will send someone to deal with it. Some councils will do this for free, but others charge a small fee for private properties. Worth noting though that they are usually cheaper than the commercial firms, and come back free of charge within a certain time period, if you have a return of the problem! Finally, make sure that you have had a good go at mouseproofing your home - if you give them somewhere to live in the garden, they will then try to get into the house once the weather gets cooler. Softwood requires maintenance, and if you do not have the time to keep it good looking, we recommend you go for composite decking, such as Millboard. We have also seen some amazing transformation with Millboard Composite Decking, as it requires very little maintenance, it has good slip-resistance, it doesn't age, and can be used in damp areas as well - such as pool surrounds. Comments (48)I have been using this for three years, i jet washed the decking first and did two coats, it did last well over a year to be honest , the following summer, just one coat was enough, it did pretty well on my decking the whole summer with extensive walking over. thats my feedback , so i am not sure why it came off so quickly on yours....See More- PRO7 years ago
