Styling suggestions

Apparently, I'm not a details person. Deciding on the various design elements for our kitchen was fairly easy, but now that it has finally all come together, I'm blanking on what to do with these shelves. I'm not a huge fan of buying stuff just for the sake of decoration, so suggestions that are pretty but practical would be really appreciated.

easy. remove them. if they werent part of a solution (storage place for beloved x) they are part of a problem.

You have already installed the backsplash prior to new tops? As long as you can get the tops out from under it , shouldn't be a problem. What color are the cabinets and floor?

Hi, I love your sofas, warm and plush! You really need to get rid of the beige rug as grey and beige don't sit well together. Pick out a warmer more vibrant colour for the rug. Get rid of the black storage units, too dated. Also, to go is the mexican pine tv unit.....again with the brown and grey. You could paint the units off white or change them. You also need to make more of a feature of the window. The curtains need to be plush and thick like the sofa. I picked out on the purple cushions that you have as they sit really well with grey. I've done a little mock up for the 't.v' end of the room and changed the rug, you'll get the idea. Good luck x

What is the construction of the wall where you hope to have the cabinets. If the wall is a stud construction, you could consider recessing the cabinet(s) so that the door(s) is (are) flush with the wall. Thank you - argh that’s not good... I’ve already ordered the lamp and very large rug in the pics.. why are they still taking orders, will cross my fingers they come! Here’s pics of the lounge from a few weeks ago - the oak display cabinet and tv unit have since been replaced with the dark French style furniture. We are still waiting for the teal chair to be delivered so ignore the dark leather one. The dark leather ottoman has since been replaced with the grey bench. The side table there in the pics has since gone. And we will replace the floor and the new fireplace will go in as soon as lock down has lifted... can get more pics in the morning if that’s more helpful.

I'm assuming you recently installed them? If they were part of your plan and you are set on keeping them, how about stacks of white plates and maybe lesser used glassware on the higher shelf? The problem is keeping all of it clean if it's not used regularly...

Hi, Tracy!

If you are not set on the shelves, I also agree that you should remove them, or at least relocate them to a better, more practical location. Since they are out in the open over your kitchen's island, I suggest stacking some nice, white tableware, glassware, or even your cookbooks or anything of that sort. I wouldn't suggest to fill up the entirety of all of your shelves as it will appear cluttered and overwhelm the kitchen space.

Yes, remove them. Put casters on the bottom and you can use it as a rolling server/bar.

Agree, white pottery, bowls, etc in a modern style, or, my solution would be to remove them. They look like potential dust catchers to me (especially in black).

What do you like, especially as relates to the kitchen? Right now, it looks like you've gone for dust collectors, with no particular relation to the kitchen. Do you make homemade jams and chutneys? Do you collect antique French kitchen towels? Those are the things I display, along with antique kitchen items. Maybe you collect Fiesta-ware.

Before you remove your shelves, try various things you like.

Obviously this idea is not for everyone. However on option would be a hanging bar area. Bottles of wine, decorative carafes of liquor, and the bottom shelf with different glass sets. You could make it look tasteful, and useful.

Great kitchen!! So nice to see a kitchen with unique elements!! The shelving is right above your dishwasher, so store your everyday dishes up there -- but make those dishes a white to match your cabinets, and choose dinnerware that has a sculptural aspect. Stacks of dinner plates, salad plates, bowls (careful that they stack well) and/or cups or mugs would be stunning. Just take a little time to think it through so the display is not a mishmash. It can be done and you've made great, bold choices for your kitchen, so I have every confidence you could do it!

Very impractical shelving. Anything breakable can easily slide out the other end and wind up on the floor or hitting your countertop. Then the item breaks AND chips the stone.

Agree - I get the idea, but it's not very practical to have shelving right there over your beautiful countertop. I'd float shelving on wall somewhere vs. over the island. Add some practical functionality such as island lighting - maybe some pendants here instead? Oh, and when or if you do decide to go with any open shelving, proudly show off some bright white dishes for a fresh look.
