Help needed for a new colour scheme in our lounge.

We can't decide on a wall colour for our large open plan lounge which has a dark wooden beamed ceiling. We also need a new carpet so aren't tied to a colour and can go with anything! The building itself is a converted school house. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Hi, what a lovely space. Have you enough budget to change the banister style? They're really busy and detract from your gorgeous ceilng. Glass panels might be good. Also, what's the floor like under the carpet? If it's decent timber could you keep it? A waxed or varnished finish could bounce some light around the room. Have you got a sofa etc? What colour is the upholstery? And of course you need to think about the colours you like! Personally I couldn't stand living with peach or terracotta colours on my walls, and I don't like pale blues either, so that limits my schemes! I think your room is big enough to have a rich colour on the end wall but you may want to go for a neutral scheme... Good luck!

I'm in agreement with Kelly. Those spindles etc would have to go. Far too busy. I'm another one who doesn't like flesh coloured walls and blues are always too cold. Depending on your furniture to blend in perhaps a deep mustard colour?

Hi Emily, I teach colour theory and my best advice is to try to think of how colours interact with each other, rather than whether you like them individually. We only have names for about thirty colours, and yet we can see hundreds of different hues. There is alot of good stuff on youtube and there is the Farrow and Ball 'How to Decorate' book. The main issue is recognising tone (how dark or light something is) and undertones (the discernible hue) that is, if something has a blue tinge, red tinge etc, even if it looks grey. It's a big subject.
