Help design my kitchen layout before my builder and husband kill me!
Comments (15)OK, I normally do gardens, but here's my take..... You kitchen is very similar to ours, which we've lived with for a few years now. Based on our experience, I'd move the sink to be opposite the cooker, with dishwasher adjacent and a ready-use plate rack over/adjacent (most people use dishwashers these days, so having the food preparation area by the window is more meaningful). You might also want to think about swapping the sink and cooker sides, since the route for dirty plates is from the dining table to the peninsula, to the dishwasher/sink. The peninsula is too narrow - this is where everything gets "dumped", so more surface area, creeping round the corner, will be much more useful: also, instead of a rounded end, a square end with cutlery drawers etc. would fit with the route of flow from kitchen to table. Agree with Ash that moving the door to the utility would work better - clear route of flow from dining area to the door without going into the more confined kitchen space. If you have an american style fridge-freezer along the bottom wall, say, you might want a second, under-unit fridge near the food prep area, for things you use all the time (thus preserving the traditional "work triangle"). Oh, and make sure you have a little spice cupboard right next to the cooker!...See MoreStill struggling with tiles or splashback!
Comments (6)upstands look good if they are only 100mm, walls must be completely smooth to paint, a splash back is a must behind a cooker either a coloured glass or a small tile as a splash back. Make sure you use a kitchen/bathroom paint on the walls and seal the upstands with a top quality mastic after painting at the top of them and your walls. Any excess mastic can be removed with wet wipes....See MoreNew room, new kitchen, layout advice still needed and much appreciated
Comments (11)I had a ushaped kitchen with peninsula in previous house as no room for island. I never felt stuck behind it- in fact i liked the fact that guests and kids were more likely to stay on the dining side out of my way! I now have an island as I'm stuck with the kitchen in the house we bought, and it drives me a bit crazy when there are lots of people in the kitchen as they all gather around the island and get in the way! I think your plan is pretty good except for oven position. I think it's really far from your workspace, and also I'd question the wisdom of having the oven beside the fridge? Maybe a tall larder cupboard in this position, and a range style cooker with double oven beneath? Or move the hob to the peninsula and put double oven somewhere along that wall?...See MoreIs An Open Plan Kitchen Still A Good Idea?
Comments (6)We love open plan kitchens, with soft seating areas and dining all in the same room. You do have to just think about the kitchen style. We have found that the 'Gloss' kitchen is not as popular in this scenario. As when you are sitting on the soft seating area, you don;t want to feel like your sitting in a glossy kitchen. The trend is definitely more mat laminates and matt lacquered doors when you do this. The kitchen then blends in more as 'furniture' then a kitchen. Another trend that we are seeing more and more of is, half height divides. Either from mid-height studwalls or from cleverly designed units/banquette seating from the kitchen. It breaks the vast space up and creates pockets of space. Hope this was useful. Thanks Paul Alexander Kitchens...See Moremiffyoliver
