I am beginning to think about a new kitchen and am very keen in having the wall cabinets to the ceiling, leaving no gaps for dust space and make use of extra storage space.
I have seen lots of examples on Houzz but am interesting to hear members views on any issues that my arise from this arrangement. I think it is a practical solution to that awkward gap...but would welcome any comments pro/against ??!

Gerty is correct from the design aspect.. it draws your eyes up the space making the room look taller. I also prefer the nice clean look that it gives. Do post picture when you're done :)

Up to the ceiling! Definitely! Had it in my last two kitchens and just about to have a new one with up to the ceiling. Not only does it take away the dust catching, rubbish collecting gap... it gives you more storage space! You can never have enough storage space! Plus...it makes the room look taller.

They usually come with metal chains don't they? Therefore, if you were able to find a joist in the ceiling above, you can put a hook in to it to hang the chain from.

Caroline, my bedroom has one wall painted in Brassica and the other three in Purbeck Stone. The ceiling is Pointing and the woodwork is Shadow White - all F&B shades colour-matched by Johnstones. The room is about the same size as your living room but has a very small window so I decided to make it cosy and calm rather than try to make it brighter. The lampshades, curtains and bedding are similar colours as I wanted to stay safe! I’m not sure I’d paint all my walls in Brassica when we re-decorate, it bounces a lovely warm glow to the other walls.The carpet and headboard are actually grey - the brassica and bedding make it a warmer almost brown grey. It’s so hard to describe colours, I’m not very good at colours (except in the garden) it I had a lot of help from a lovely lady in the F&B shop.

Hi, we at Dual Designs are often designing kitchens up to the ceiling. It is usually because of the client requiring more cupboard space, along with making sure the design will suit their beautiful dream kitchen. We have designed cabinets up to the ceiling in large and small rooms, both work really well. It mainly comes down to person taste, some people would never leave a gap at the top, with the 'dust trap' word mentioned. Others who don't mind a gap would often say they can't reach high units and don't want to use a ladder. We always consider both the practical side along with the design and give an honest assessment to help our clients.

I would think taking the cabinets up to the ceiling can work though a good designer will confirm this for you, so I hope that helps and good luck

Up to the ceiling for me too. I can't abide cleaning over the top. It's just wasted space. Might as well have the extra shelf inside the unit.

I am in the process of renovating our house and kitchen also and have opted for the floor to ...almost ceiling. I was advised that as it is an older house the walls and ceilings are not completely even so better to have it almost to ceiling but leaving a gap to allow for the differences. I also found that using old newspapers for the top of units to catch the dust an inexpensive and easy option for controlling the dust. So far so good!

I am getting a new kitchen soon & am definitely having up to the ceiling no gap. Looks really good & is not a dust collector.

I think it also depends if you have lovely coving..... If you do then I think it is a pity to cover this feature.

Thank you all for your replies..... it seems like a no brainer .. we are lucky as our room has no uneven space and no lovely coving to hide. It's a large room and the extra storage space will help as I'm going to loose the island in the new kitchen. We are going to bring in a large dinner table for family lunches and my young family are now needing space for school work. Decided if I miss the island it's something we can put back in at a later date... ( coincidences as article in Houzz newsletter- covered this topic to this week!)
