British vs. American design - what are the differences?
Comments (30)I was thinking about UK vs US style the other day after reading an article on Trump's decorating of the White House: https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2017/aug/24/trumps-3m-white-house-redesign-is-as-drab-as-a-downmarket-hotel There are points where it is difficult to say US or UK, especially in high end apartments in Manhattan, Georgetown in DC and perhaps some part of San Fran which could easily be in London, Bath or Edinburgh. But overall you could put a slide deck up on interiors and most can easily say if they are in the UK or US. Various UK TV shows have changed what used to be dark small spaces into light homes with many people knocking through rooms to add light, removing curtains and painting with light colours. The US is moving that way but still use a lot of darker woods. The US do tend to go for details - window and ceiling mouldings, solid wood doors and outdoor landscaping....See MoreDo you have a fire pit in your garden?
Comments (81)I helped my Dad build a fire pit in his garden, he made wooden seats to sit around the metal fire pit with old stone columns for extra seating (unfortunately you can't see the actual fire-pit as behind the stone bench). Lots of stories and fun are had around it until deep into the night. If you have the space it is a great addition to put in! Shannon...See MoreYour dream home
Comments (4)My dream home would have an impressive entrance with a modest room nearby for coats, shoes, prams etc. I would want a small but grand living room for entertaining guests, with two sofas facing each other and a fireplace, this room would be near a wet bar and wine room. I would have a dining room with a large circular table for 8 and a butlers pantry next to it. The kitchen would be big and sociable and access the garden and include casual dining and room for everyone to watch TV comfortably. I would have two small rooms off the kitchen:- One would be a pantry with a freezer and an overflow fridge for parties. The other would be an appliance room and a slow cooker, stand mixer, bread maker etc could all be at hand but hidden from main view. There would be a side access to the house from the parking area and garage. The garage should be big enough to be able to park and get out comfortably. My preferred choice would be to not see the cars or garage doors from the front but equally I don’t like driveways that surround houses like a moat cutting them off from the garden. Near the house I would like a covered area so that outside furniture is protected from the elements and I would want features that make the outside space useable of an evening such as lighting, an outdoor fireplace and heaters. Upstairs it is important to me to have a hotel quality bedroom, lots of storage and although I like an ensuite it is important to me to not have the WC too close to my pillow or tooth brush. I think it is nice to have an upstairs area with a TV. An upstairs laundry room is practical and I think it is lovely to give guests their own bathroom. For me slight higher ceilings and tall windows lend grandeur to even very modern houses. I prefer visually interesting houses which can be achieved with symmetry, asymmetry, expensive materials or interesting features such as the roofline or windows. My perfect house would sit behind an electric gate. Please build all of this for me......See MoreWhat would you do with the space? Ideas, recommendations, inspiration?
Comments (9)Hi. I’m no good at doing plans on computer I’m afraid ( I possibly could but it would take me hours) but I did do a little sketch with what I think could work. Just note that it’s not to scale and I’m not a pro, just a hobby of mine. So I’m thinking shed in top right corner then in between greenhouse and shed you could lay paving and have an area for an outdoor fireplace or bbq area. Just think it would be nice to have that area as more of a working yard, somewhere you can potter about (potting bench perhaps). Then I put a corner summerhouse in the left hand corner with path leading from it to the new patio area. The bench and slabs in the middle I would perhaps remove to open the lawn space but you could keep the trees depending on what variety they are, trees can grow very big. Otherwise I think you’ve done a great job so far:). It’s a nice size garden so plenty of possibilities. Here’s my rough sketch and some ideas for outdoor fireplace:...See MoreJust Grillin Outdoor Living
