I need new ideas for garden small features

Our business supplies all sorts of stone carvings including small sculptures which can be installed in the garden. We need to know what would be popular this summer

I think coral is going to be an up and coming design feature in the near future, starting to see it in shops already. Anything that reminds us of a tropical paradise:)

Ooh Kate - where to start? You have soo many options but I think first of all you need to define your style. You should investigate the strength of your terrace to work out how much weight it can handle- likely you can’t have large planters full of soil and trees so you will have to make weight choices- this means lower weight resin planters, half filled with soil and half filled with polystyrene. Plants that don’t mind less soil and therefore less moisture. You should also be realistic about the location- is it exposed? Will some large leaves plants get burned by wind? Will getting stuff in be inconvenient because of the size of stairwells? Then perhaps you could enlist a designer to help you with the planning and suggest a layout that helps with privacy, and lighting to create a lovely atmosphere. Your plan might well include a water feature to create sound to drown out urban noise, infrared heating, a watering system, and trellis/ fabric dividers/ glass screens or pergolas to create a room feel and help with privacy and subtle lighting that does not affect neighbours but creates a lovely atmosphere for entertaining. Short term I would ensure that the builder provides power and water to the garden area. You can search images for inspiration and gain clarity on what is possible weight wise and establish your budget. You should also have a plan should your garden need to be removed for maintenance to the roof.

I think a second patio would be a great idea to catch the last bit of sun. I think trellis to hide the shed is great too and I see you have a climber (honeysuckle, wisteria?) growing on it which is great too. I’m thinking a nice circle for the second patio would be great with some seating. I’m not a fan of decking. It soon starts to rot (I’m speaking from experience) and it’s so slippery when it’s wet. My deck is 8 years old and already rotting in the damper corners. I would choose sandstone paving, which come in ready made circles if you want, or pavers are lovely. You can get clay ones which are pricey but beautiful, or concrete ones which are much cheaper and similar to your main patio. Love Carolina’s and embzop‘s suggestions! How can I add privacy to my corner garden on busy road? Ideas needed!

Do not despair, there is a lot you can do to make your garden more secluded with new fencing and clever planting. Is this your only garden? Can I ask whether there is any covenant preventing you from having a taller fence? If not, then can I suggest a 5’ solid fence all round, with a gate. Most dogs will easily jump over your current fence and I’m sure you want to keep your dog safe. If a solid fence is not allowed, then a tall picket fence will do the job, or add taller panels to your current fence as in the second pic. I think a pergola in one corner will give you some more privacy, and you can plant climbers on it for even more privacy (first pic). You can buy them as a flat pack or get a carpenter to make and build one for you. You can add comfy seating, and a doggy bed, under it so you can enjoy your garden on warm days. Now for the planting. I think tall shrubs will create a secret garden effect which will drown out traffic noise and visitor noise! Things like evergreens Viburnum tinus, Ceanothus, Photinia and Choisya ternata Sundance. They can be the bones of your garden. Then add shrubs that are deciduous but add colour in the spring and summer, things like Shrub Roses, Hibiscus, dwarf Lilac, Cotinus and Climbers like Clematis, Star Jasmine, Honeysuckle and climbing roses. These need a wall or trellis or an obelisk to climb up. I can see you have some planting already which is great. The final addition to the planting is perennial flowers and bulbs, but the planting above will create a cosy garden, if you don’t want more planting.
