How to Stain Natural Oak Doors

Hi, I would welcome your recommendations please. I have had 9 Genoa oak doors from Howdens installed in my property (see link below) and these have not yet been varnished/stained/protected. I like the natural colour so do not want to change that but need to stain/protect the doors. I wondered what equipment I should be using to sand down and stain the doors specifically and how I should be doing it exactly. I really don't want to make a mistake as I cannot afford to buy the doors again so welcome any advice. Many thanks. Tina

I think I have these same doors (but mine are from vibrant doors). I have natural wood floors so I used the same product on the doors - Osmo 'raw' and then Osmo clear oil. The raw keeps the doors looking like natural wood and then the clear is there to protect. It's pretty easy to do, follow the instructions regarding drying time. Give the doors a light sand to remove any rough bits and then apply the raw. When dry, give the lightest sand possible and then apply the top coat. My tip would be to purchase one of these containers to store your oiled brushes in, the oil is very difficult to clean out so if you keep the brushes in one of these they stay soft. Also, keep a separate brush for the raw and the topcoat. Good luck.

I installed all oak doors, linings, architraves and skirtings in my house and they look great. As above we always use pellets to cover the screw holes running with the grain and you hardly notice them. My walls were very bad at the bottom where the skirting touched so i rebated the back of the skirtings to allow them to sit upright properly. Due to movement don't miter the internal corners. Its much better to butt and scribe them so any shrinkage doesnt open the joint as noticeably. If cost is an issue then ash is a cheaper alternative and looks very similar.

Hello. Those doors are beautiful and do not need glass that will block your view and compete for attention. My suggestion is to have clear glass. If you can find old style antiqued glass, or handmade glass that would be my vote. Otherwise just use plain glass. The key is the view through the doors (both ways). The doors will function as a frame so arrange furniture accordingly. I suggest new long curtains that hang closer to the ceiling. A beautiful neutral linen, or something that excites you. If you hang a vibrant or patterned curtain then your black sofa (is it a chair?) will not dominate the view through the doors. If you elect for a neutral curtain, then you may want to relocate the black sofa in favour of a more neutral piece. Beautiful home, what we can see of it. Good luck!

Even though I am a fan of oak doors and I like how they look in most cases, in this case, it would be a bit excessive. They would not match the general atmosphere in the house that is so light and even a little Victorian. You may try and install some small 1930s internal doors made of oak and see for yourself. It might work if you choose the correct color. I would paint it too creamy white, so it does not stand out much. It’s up to you, and you must decide what you like the most. You can find many pictures on the Internet and apply them to your house to see what it will look like.

I would paint the skirting boards in pointing to make the ceilings look higher (perhaps the coving too). Why not use a complimentary paint for the doors, maybe something Oxford stone (will appear a bit lighter on wood). I actually quite like the conservatory but you could pick another colour for the stairs? I would just say if you’ve done the whole house in pointing make sure you’re 100% happy as it’s a lot easier to change walls than wood!

Would certainly recommend a thin wire wool (steel) to sand the wood before hand. Don't use sand paper. Be gentle and the wool provides just the right about of abrasion to remove rough areas.

We use Osmo on our hardwood gates (its a really good product especially if you just want to enhance the appearance of the oak without colouring it). How we get a perfect finish is apply with a brush then lightly smooth down using a decorators sponge. This has to be done when just applied but removes all the brush marks from it. We apply three coats but as indoors I expect you only need 2 coats (leave 24 hours between each one).
