Dark window frames with Oak doors?

I am going round and round in circles and losing my mind!! We moved into our new home a year ago and painted everything Pointing, which is a kind of Magnolia, until we decided how we wanted to decorate.

What started as a simple task of wallpapering the alcoves in the lounge has now turned into something more challenging! All the doors and paintwork in the entire house are stained a dark mahogany colour, in keeping with the outside of the house which has a cottage type appearance, but this tends to make the interior somewhat dark and depressing as it is not a big house. There is also a conservatory on the back of the house which is also in Mahogany. My dilemma is:

Would I get away with changing all the doors to Oak to match the floor and furniture and paint the door frames, window sills and skirting boards white?

Should I paint the window sills Pointing instead of white so they blend into the wall?

I want to keep the charm of the house so don't really want to go with white doors.

Changing the skirting boards to Oak is not an option as the floor is relatively new and to be honest I could not face the upheaval.

I still intend to paper the alcoves and paint the fireplace in a complimentary colour...but that's another story!!!

I probably have not explained this as well as I should but hopefully the photos will help.

I would really appreciate your thoughts and would value any input or suggestions you could give me before I get sectioned!!

I would paint the skirting boards in pointing to make the ceilings look higher (perhaps the coving too). Why not use a complimentary paint for the doors, maybe something Oxford stone (will appear a bit lighter on wood). I actually quite like the conservatory but you could pick another colour for the stairs?

I would just say if you’ve done the whole house in pointing make sure you’re 100% happy as it’s a lot easier to change walls than wood!

Painting out the mahogany will make a huge difference to the light. Painting the woodwork white or Pointing would both work. Pointing is a lot brighter than magnolia but there are some beautiful alternative shades you could paint the walls, if you wanted a change of course. The conservatory looks grey, but that may be the light! I also really like your stairs.

I don't have any photos (useful!) however my brother painted his panelling. Where you've got the cupboard with the checker board design, he's got cupboards either side of a window (assume yours is too). He removed the top 2 shelves and has long mirrors in there but kept the bottom shelves for accessories. His fireplace (and the room isn't too dissimilar actually!) is very much like the picture but he's got a cast iron insert and grate. He originally had alcoves and shelves either side of the fire but he's just done some diy panelling (keeping the original behind) so it's now the same as the pic minus the shelf. He only had a couple of beams so they're painted the ceiling colour. I must admit there were a few family comments re painting the wood (and the front door!) but it does look good. I agree with what Emily said though, paint the ceiling, change the carpet and put your furniture in and reassess

LTS yes I think it's too dark. It does have elegance but also gloomy, especially at night! I've had quite a few neighbours say these like it, but some also feel too dark. I'm literally stuck trying to find the right colour! The roof (currently) is slte but has a reddish/purple hue so along with the slight cool blue hue to the white render it's proving tricky!!

Will a dark worktop work with an oak parquet floor in the kitchen ??

I think it would depend on the tone of the oak and the tone of the walnut. I don’t think yellow/orange oak would work with a reddish walnut, but an almost black walnut might work with a grey toned oak floor, especially if there’s darker tones in the oak. However, I would agree not to mix— you already have oak parquet and marble tiles. I think adding a third strong texture could be a step too far. If it was me, I’d either get an oak worktop, marble effect worktop, or a worktop that works with the tones within the marble. Speaking from experience btw—I once combined a harlequin floor, cherry effect worktops, travertine and accent patterned tiles. I hated it, it made me so uncomfortable that less than two years later I covered the splashback tiles with panelling painted to tone with creamy whites on doors and floor. Such a relief! And a much more flexible starting point for adding other colour/bursts of pattern.
