What tips do you have for painting tiles in kitchen?

We Re planning to paint our kitchen units but do not really want to remove tiles - what advice would you give to avoid trouble?

D'you want to repaint the tiles to go with the units?

If so, sand, prime, paint, wait 48 hours, very gently sand back, paint again, then wait one year until finances have recovered and rip out and replace tiles ;-)

It was still worth it, mind you, just to not have to look at the hideous 60s tiles in the kitchen and bathroom for a year.

Hi Pat, make sure to ensure the tiles are clean, then sand it. Ceramic tiles have a glossy finish that doesn't grab hold of paint well. Choose a epoxy primer to prepare the surface and then opt for a high-gloss or semigloss paint.

There are definitely good decorators and bad ones - I certainly agree with Jenny Boyd and A.S.! Some professionals are most certainly better than others and just because they do this for a living doesn't necessarily mean you're guaranteed a quality result every time. I've had superb results from good decorators, and shocking outcomes from others. I had some so-called professional decorators do the rest of my house and the finish was even worse than my kitchen efforts - paint splashes on hardware and glazing, poor coverage, dust dried into the workwork etcetc. Just shocking! So I should have qualified my statement with get a professional to do it if you can verify that they really know what they're doing and that their standards will match your expectations!

Does anyone have resin flooring - what do you think?

Hi there! I have clients who had this done. Basically resin floor is great however if you decide do have it you need to be prepared for little marks. If you move furniture around you might find difficult to get rid of the old marks where they were positioned. Hope this helped.

You can get paint specifically for painting tiles. Ronseal do one though I can’t recommend as I’ve never used it. I’m sure other places also do their own version. I think it’s best to use a mini foam roller to apply the paint to avoid brush marks.

I can vouch for sticker tiles, having used them to cover tiles behind hob when we moved in. I bought them from Etsy and the seller modified the size to match the off size tiles we had. Very easy to use, and we had them in place for 3 years as a temp fix until kitchen was updated. Wipe down easily and good enough that no one realised they were not real. Good luck.
