How much space do you need behind a sofa arranged this way?

There is a walking aisle behind this sofa- 3 feet is the standard allowance. This aisle is 42" because it is a busy path to the exterior door.

I think the option of having the tv under the stairs.. Is the best idea.. Maybe have a tv, media unit made to measure if possible .. Draws or cupboards underneath for storage. Small shelves at the sides for little ink-naks. If needed.. A smaller maybe glass oblong table in front of the window. The table will still allow light through.. Making sure passable through to the stairs.. And the sofa on the back wall.. Lovely rug in the centre with coffee table or chest for extra storage if needed... Maybe some open floating shelves off set above the sofa. Use an accent colour with accessories.. From the rug or cushions.. Don't go overboard with large piece of furniture... Simple statements....

Thanks Carolin. I love the idea of the ledges but the main issue then would be how to get a lamp to the right hand side of the sofa where it tends to get a bit dark later at night. I'm not sure a floor lamp would look right there, along with the picture ledges, as it would be too close to the door and I'm not sure the perspective of looking at a tall light would work. I do love picture ledges however.

I must admit, i too think it will probably look a little weird, and, no offence, but T.V drama sets, don't need to be practical. Why do you want a fireplace, if not to look at? What sort of fire were you anticipating as obviously the type depends upon where you could put it in the first place.

Karen, here is my reply to your question"How can I hang curtains without cutting off the couch?" I think you mean because the couch is pushed into the bay space where do my curtains go? There is little space behind the couch to have curtains which will enhance the area. The couch completely fills the area. It looks like there are vertical blinds at the window (am I correct?). I suggest long 'dress' ( non-working) curtains either side of the couch which will visually widen the window area. Have a decorative pole set about halfway between the ceiling and the recess for the curtains. This will frame the window and couch. Behind the couch have a roman blind that if possible drops alittle below the sill so it is masked when closed. The top of the roman blind should go right up to the ceiling thus hiding the vertical blind headrail when in the fully 'up' position. I endorse Kia's and Bubbles' comments about colour and texture, but do balance the boldness with the rest of the room. Too bold and this bay area will become the focal point and I don't know what the rest of the room is like. Don't have the same fabric as the curtains and roman blind as cushions on this couch, but do put the matching cushions on the other couch in the room so that the bold new feature is linking into the rest of the room. The fabric doesn't have to be the same for the roman blind and the curtains to avoid a 'matchy-matchy' look that's not trendy today. I hope this is of help.
