We have a ceiling mounted extractor in a very large room and it works really well. We ended up with a Brittania BEST extractor (bought from John Lewis) simply because we have a structural steel running above and the position of the internal ducting fit best with that model, though it's a bit bigger than we ideally wanted. The slightly lowered section of ceiling around the extractor is also because of the steel and wouldn't otherwise have been needed. We were actually told that there is a minimum height, rather than maximum, for it to work properly - see http://www.besthoods.co.uk/2011/08/ceiling-extractors-8-things-you-need-to-consider-before-buying-a-ceiling-hood/ It's very powerful and we've had no issues with it. A family member has the pop up option and that has been a bit of a hassle - it's not that powerful and ends up getting dirty from cooking every time.

Outside ducting for kitchen island downdraft extractor

We ended up with the Bora (and non-bora branded ducting, which has been fine, despite the warnings from the Bora team to not go off brand…). ducting goes straight down from the island and then runs under the kicthen floor and patio to an airbrick built into the patio step. Distance from island to airbrick is c.5.5m. No issues (after 12 months) with condensation or anything similar. its the dream.

I'm not being creative enough I think. Was hoping to have a little island in the middle of room but not sure I can get cupboards in towards sloping ceiling and have the island too. Floor to ceiling cupboards for higher section

Hi Rhys, Hope you have made some decisions, regarding this project that will suit the way you will use and utilise this space. Have you thought about a central island which: - Could be customised and tailored to match your kitchen cabinets as well as the dimensions of the space (slimline) - Is moveable (and lockable once placed centrally in the kitchen area) and could be neatly stored on the wall (as pictured). Take into account the opening of the cupboards on the back wall opposite (you would have to move the central island to accommodate this request! - In addition it could be moveable that slots and locks under the breakfast bar area, with a narrowing to one side to accommodate two breakfast bar chairs (or as suggested on the posts a breakfast bar on the wall mounted in the area near the wine rack back wall) - Ask Wren: to provide a few variations on the colour cabinet design - so you can obtain a feeling of how a lighter colour cabinet would feel in the space also! Hope this helps!
