Products for staining the oak staircase

We have just had the stair installed and were wondering if anyone knew of a product that can be put on top of the oak to take the yellow colour away. Ideally we would like to match it to our flooring which is a white oak. Could anyone recommend some products please?

I've used this in the past on an oak floor to take the yellow look away... it's a bit of an art you wipe on and wipe off to get it just right... but worth a go !

Oak isn't yellow if not already finished with a product. Could you submit a picture or let us know if the oak has been sealed in some way, or varnished which may account for the yellowing. This will then dictate what to do next.

If it is untreated and has nothing on it whatsoever there are many options. I have just put down unfinished wide oak planks and have treated them with a white Osmo tinted oil. You can brush it on and leave it or you can remove the excess after 20 minutes to give a sunbleached look. You then apply a coat of Osmo clear and you are done. Hello, there are many different products to use, I like brand Ronseal quick drying Vanish. Steps are quiet easy, sand door with medium sandpaper. In addition, if you like you can use White Spirit (make cotton cloth dump and wipe door's surface). It will remove some oils and will guarantee smooth application. Use soft, good quality brush and apply thin layer, let it dry. Before to apply final coat, use soft sandpaper to remove all last imperfections. Apply last coat and let it dry. I think I have these same doors (but mine are from vibrant doors). I have natural wood floors so I used the same product on the doors - Osmo 'raw' and then Osmo clear oil. The raw keeps the doors looking like natural wood and then the clear is there to protect. It's pretty easy to do, follow the instructions regarding drying time. Give the doors a light sand to remove any rough bits and then apply the raw. When dry, give the lightest sand possible and then apply the top coat. My tip would be to purchase one of these containers to store your oiled brushes in, the oil is very difficult to clean out so if you keep the brushes in one of these they stay soft. About osmo on stairs: if you put too much on, it will be slippy. Used sparingly it will be fine; it’s easily touched up. There’s tester sachets available for all their colours, and you can fix it if you make a mistake—I’ve done it, although granted you can’t get it back to a normal raw surface, I don’t think. As far as maintenance goes, I had it on my upstairs hall in my old house—including outside the bathroom. I found it easy to clean and look after.

Try Osmo Polyx Oil Tints, White. You'll need to fully sand back any existing finishes which may be time consuming but worth it. Each tin is about £70, I use this product more than any other on my projects and clients always love it and so will you! Robert

It is also possible to purchase small samples of the colours - others are available from OSMO - Wood Finishes Direct is a good place to buy these from as they are cost effective.
