Need help with how best to update our inglenook fireplace!
Comments (16)I think it is charming the way it is and if you put some big birch branches or something sculptural in there and some contemporary natural wood pieces or primitive art in the living room, it would all blend together. Please don't take out the windows--that will affect the whole face of the building. Rustic and modern is mixed all the time and can look terrific and give the place a little character. I think the Europeans do it particularly well. You could tone down the mortar with a stain. Unless it is in bad shape, repointing is messy and expensive and tough to do well....See MoreTransition from rear to side extension
Comments (3)On the drains, it depends if it is private or public on build over agreements. If the drain only comes from your property and none of your neighbours empties into it then the drain is private until it reaches the road. If the drain has one or more neighbours using it and you just happen to be the last on the run then it is public across your land and you would need to get the utilities provider permission to build over it. Best way to find out if you don't have the paper records is tip a little bit of powder paint into your neighbours sewer at an external manhole whilst lifting your own and see if it flows past. If its private you can build over, if public seek approval from the utilities provider....See MorePepping up bathroom - under sink cabinet, wood & paint/paper ideas pls
Comments (10)Thanks all. 1. A carpenter/fitter is coming around on Sat for the kitchen - I'll ask him for a quote for this too. In the meantime, I've been googling/thinking, and saw this from IKEA: http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/washstands-taps/wash-stands/fullen-wash-basin-cabinet-white-art-70189041/ (& pale green countertop: http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/washstands-taps/wash-stands/viskan-countertop-pale-green-art-70354804) I just need to remove a slice of the base at the rear for it to be level with the top of the basin. Hope that doesn't look weird. 2. Will paint the door frame - satinwood or similar. Easy one, that. :) 3./4. Will look at the navy/teal/dark grey wallpapers and paint. I think a combination of them may look really good. Have requested some samples - just waiting for them to arrive now! Great. Can't wait to get going now....See MoreIdeas on how to cover a radiator fitted below a window seat
Comments (14)Thanks. The seat is 50cms deep and was originally designed by an architect to be a window seat. It still has the same solid support for the first 40cms depth, I've just removed the original decorative panel and replaced it with a very thin radiator. The old wooden front panel and supports would probably still have fitted back in place but I disliked it and threw it out, and it wouldn't have been easy to perforate. I'd been trying to avoid a metal screen, as I can imagine it will clang a bit if someone's sitting on the seat and swinging their legs. But it's a good idea apart from that. My current thought is to have a fixed panel in the middle and some hinged doors at each end of the radiator (for access) ,with the MDF attached to the front edge of the seat rather than fitted underneath. I'll go and take a look at those metal sheets thought :)...See MoreUser
