Underfloor heating in kitchen?

Our fitters have fitted underfloor pipes all over a new kitchen floor, including under where the larder units and fridge etc are going to go. Should we be worried that they will be heating our cupboards (MFC units with wood doors)? Thanks for advice from anyone with experience of this!

Hi there. While I'm not a technician or kitchen expert I do have underfloor heating myself and I have recommended several clients to install it. While I wouldn't necessarily be worried about the heat damaging the cupboards themselves, I would question the cost of running heating under those spaces, not only in installation costs but also running it. I also wouldn't want to store food in them as they'll get too warm. It will, of course, depend on what flooring you'll have on top, and also how high a temperature you put the floor onto. Hi there!
We had electric under floor heating in our previous kitchen. The floor was ceramic looking like slate. Anyway, the builder installed it everywhere except under the units/island.
Maybe you could put your food/ grocery items in a tall larder, therefore minimising the contact with warm flooring?

Thank you all for your comments. Maria, I think you are quite right saying that the corner where the kitchen is situated in the drawings will get dark by mid afternoon and to add a bit of extra light to that area, we are planning to add some glass on the roof as half of it is an extension. If you look at the end of the utility room you will see that this was the original back wall of the house. The ground floor was extended by the previous owners but they put a double conservatory in order to extend which is not practical at all (too hot in the summer/too cold in winter) so we are looking to re-roof and to add some glass on the roof to allow extra light to come into the darker side of the room. We are also removing an internal wall. I am attaching the drawings of the house as it is now for your information. The current layout is quite different. As you come in from the hall into the back of the house we have quite a large dining table and after that the family seating/tv area. From here there is a wide opening to the left that takes you to what currently is a big play area and then the kitchen to the back of this. This layout is relatively new as I needed to find out if I could live with the toys so close to the kitchen and family area. What used to be the play area, a separate room at the front of the house, is now a "grown up room". The access to the house is from the front, into the hall and then you have the door that will give you access into a large room at the back of the house. I don't need (or want) the two doors showing on the drawings. To be honest at this point nothing is set in stone so the room is a blank canvas. The drawings we have are very basic and do not really reflect what we want but maybe is that we weren't clear enough when we gave our instructions to begin with and that's why I thought I should post here to get fresh ideas and then go back to the guy. As you said, this is going to be quite an investment and it needs to work now while the kids are still small but also in the future. We enjoy having friends and family over so the big open plan space will be great. I just need to make sure the layout we decide to go for is the right one. Many thanks!

It won't absorb the heat but it may dry it out. Add beeswax weekly to keep it hydrated.

Hi Emily, Wood flooring in the kitchen is perfectly fine. You can opt for a varnished floor that require no special maintenance apart from adequate cleaning, or an oiled floor that do require regular oiling but that is also easier to repair or re-sand. underfloor heating is not a problem either and although wood is an excellent insulator (unlike ceramic tiles) the heat from the underfloor heating will make your wood floor warm and comfortable. However, always remember that with underfloor heating you need to keep en eye on air and floor temperature and air humidity. Too dry (which is often the case with underfloor heating) and gapping between floorboards can appear. Too humid and the floor may "cup". Fell free to get in touch if you need more info. All the best.

Hi there - your flooring is gorgeous and I can already see you have really beautiful character features in your property. Ideally you want your tiles to go with the style of the units in your kitchen, so if it is a modern kitchen I would go with similar tiles to match your existing floor boards and possibly a contrasting colour from the units. https://www.britishceramictile.com/hd/white-matt-wall-floor-bct21247 If it has a bit more character, have you considered black and white tiles with a pattern? Your hallway already has a monochrome look going on so you would be connecting the two areas in this way. I also have electric underfloor heating in both our bathrooms and when we laid it many years ago I'm sure I recollect instructions saying not to fit under units. In both our bathrooms we have fitted units all round for storage and did not fit it underneath them.
I don't think I'd like the idea of it fitted under cupboards especially a fridge/freezer.

HI ,, may I know if you had any issues for fixing the cabinets to the floor as having UFH would not allow use of fixings in fear of puncturing the pipes?

Hi. Our builders did the same in our kitchen extension and when questioned said it was a standard approach so that if we changed layout in future it would still heat the room.
It did feel like a waste heating under the cupboards, but in the 6 years we were there didn’t have any issues with the cupboards. Our food was mainly stored in top cupboards.
