Use Internal glass screen to brighten up room
To better illustrate, I've done some rough drawing using online software. I've also attached here a photo of the crittal style internal glass screen I have in mind.
Also let me know if there are any other better or cheaper way to solve this light problem. Note that we cannot remove the separation between dining room and corridor due to fire regulation (this is a 3 storey terrace house).

Comments (2)Hi Carol, This is a tricky one. Window films won't stick very well to a textured glass surface. The only solution that we came up with is that it may be possible to buy a thin (around 5mm) piece of acrylic and get it cut to size to fit inside the window frame on the inside. Comments (26)Hi Sophie I think your room is a lovely size with great windows - they need some curtains to soften that end of the room I would suggest. I particularly like your floor which is a warm colour. My choice would be to pick up the tones in the floor and use a buttermilk colour on the walls - something like Travertine mid from Little Green on the walls, travertine light on the ceiling and Travertine on the woodwork. If you banish the greyish rug and look for something either with deep pink or burnt orange colours in a pattern and pick that up in a pattern on curtains and some of the cushions together with a lime green and an aqua blue to add some freshness. I agree bigger plants and find a stand for a big plant. Lighting - if you can access the ceiling more downlighters would be great. You could change them all to dimmable and ensure they are warm light. I also use up free standing lighters. The one in the photo has three brightness settings and is great. If you repeat you bookcase on the other side of you door you could use LED light strips above those. We have some under and above kitchen wall cupboards which are on all day in winter in our east facing kitchen. They give a lovely warm glow. Carefully chosen paintings/prints to pick up colour from the sofa and rug and cushions. Have fun....See More

6 years agoThis house also had an issue with light so did the same thing. If you can afford it I think they look stunning. Could you consider a banquette for more space? Could you also consider a faux roof light using an led panel? How much light do you get in the hall?

I would opt for a banquette to optimise on space and you can have some storage under the seating.

6 years agoI love Crittal but worry that you won't appreciate the expenditure as it will be in a space where people won't be able to stand back and see it.
If it were me I would use crittal doors to make the entrance to the space grander, I would put the dining table somewhere else- although I can't dispute the logic of having it right next to the kitchen it will make walking through that space a little tight.
I would perhaps have a drinks area in the dining space and move the table.

6 years agoI must admit I thought it was going to be dearer than 5k! It is a lot of money though particularly if you're unsure. Or can you just install a transom window over your existing door? It won't be as effective but will still allow light through and then just consider the rest of the interior design to maximise the light? A sliding door could work well using Jonathan's idea of grander doors but I assume that will up the budget . I think 3ft is a minimum as a walkway if the chairs tuck under but it doesn't work particularly well when people are eating. I love a banquette anyway but they're great for space saving with a comfier seat. I can't find great pics nor do I really know how they work but you basically install an led light panel and then you can dress it how you want. Using daylight bulbs you can then time it to come on. I was just attempting to find google images of them which was hard but the last pic is from a company called soul speak designs in Essex. It might be worth giving them a call

6 years agoGlass curtains are an option. I dont know if they exsist in the UK. They are fireproof.

If you need the dining table there I would definitely go for a banquet style seating area that can be pulled out when required but give enough space on a daily basis for passing sensibly.
It seems like this space would really benefit from a 3D render package allowing you to visualise the space and how it will look when finished. You would then be able to try a few different options on the door front as well as the seating area.
They don't only allow you to visualise the space saving you from making costly mistakes but you can then also use them when sourcing and with contractors to get your ideas and requirements across more clearly.
I added a few images from some our recent 3D's to give you an idea of what you get (usually 5/7 images of each space).

6 years agoYou do have a very valid point about the person seated in the middle not being able to get out easily but if space is an issue so would that person seated on a chair have to ask the next one to move, so really its a small price to pay. There are a few makers of banquettes but you could find a way to create one yourself with realtive ease depending on your diy skills. Search for ikea hacks to make a banquette. A rather easy one can be found here but there are others with drawers for storage, which may require more skill. http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/3962936

6 years agoPersonally I would rather see doors but if it is going to add massively to the budget perhaps crittal is not the solution. Have you considered any other internal doors?
