Will I fit 5 people around a Kitchen Island?

I am working on extending my Kitchen and pulling everything out and putting a new kitchen. I would really like an island in the middle but I will need to fit 5 people around it! Any Ideas??

How big will the island be? That should determine how many people can sit around it.

Just as a rough guide everyone needs around a min of 750mm sitting room, therefore one at either end ( if possible ) and three in the middle would make it 2250mm wide by 750 deep.

Dear Wombatchild The two double ovens are on that back wall. The distance from them to the end of the island is 2.6 mtrs. The bank of units is mirror imaged from the centre of the ovens and that means there are two slim pull out larder cupboards on that wall. That 2.6m means that they can be pulled out and it is still no problem for traffic to be flowing past. My hob is on the island itself and the extractor comes up through the granite when in use. That far end of the island is great for taking things out of the oven and checking on food ...... turning potatoes over etc... To the left of that bank of units is a door to my boot room so I need walk way space there. This thread is quite old now and I may be repeating something I typed earlier but I love my kitchen ( think it is about six years since I had it out in) ..... The only things I would have done differently would have been not to have stainless steel sinks as they are a devil to keep looking nice! And I would like more contemporary pendant lights over the island instead of those chrome chandeliers - can change them but still working on husband on that point!!!! X

It really depends on how you like to use the space. Are you a big foodie - always in the kitchen experimenting with a new dish? Do you love to entertain with lots of people round for dinner parties? Or does the large dining table only really get used a couple of times a year? Do you eat at a diner table daily or do you tend to watch tv while you eat? Or are you really into films and chill out sessions? It just depends on priorities and lifestyle. Do you expect there to be children in the space or will it just be you for the foreseeable future? Etc etc, the more information the better interior design can help to make the space fit your life. I’m not an expert in this, I work as a luxury goods designer rather than interiors. There’s lots of brilliant professionals on here that can help though.

Hi NYC, I have seen this problem before. Is the floor on joists or is it a solid concrete floor? If it's on joists you may have a real problem as it sounds as if the joists are bouncing under the weight. This is a very large island therefore very heavy. If the island is on joists and these are moving you need to underpin the floor by adding steel underneath or building up brick piers under the joists to stop the flexing. I would suggest you address this urgently. I would advise you to have a structural engineer look at it. If it's on concrete this shouldn't be such an issue (Hope you're on concrete) Assuming concrete there should not be any movement on the floor so the issue is with the flooring material. Check to see if it has been laid tight to the walls if so the flooring material will expand with any changes in temperature or moisture absorbed from the concrete. The floor should be laid with a gap between it and the wall then the skirting boards fitted over the top to cover the expansion gap. This way the floor can expand and contract without creaking or buckling. Hope that helps, Martin www.ange-martin.com

Hi Emma, I noticed you are seeking advice on your kitchen extension, and I would love to know more about how you would use the space. Looking from your basic drawing I personally would have your dining table parallel to your kitchen island so it’s a smoother transition from your living space. You could consider a built-in bespoke banquette seating so it doesn’t take as much space and would look really smart (size and space depending).
