My Kitchen Hurts!`

We recently moved into a great house--with a lot of renovating work. But the kitchen! Argh! A modern/rustic nightmare!

Brown/black marble counters

Shlocky job stained/dirty looking counters

Light tan walls

Appliances--new, aluminum color

Dark brown wood floors

Arched rustic dark wood ceiling over kitchen table

Modern nickel brushed hardware on cabinets

Added to this: a beautiful kitchen set, upholstery--rust/teal

And a wild pattened rug --incorporating the rust and teal, plus light green. You really see the rust.

I'd love to get rid of the rustic look on the walls/cabinets, bring in a light color?

Hi Laura, thanks for posting. Wow, it looks amazing! Amazing how much difference the floor, splashback and mirror make, it's transformed. Well done. I'm struggling to like a splashback in my new kitchen (even though I chose it) so was looking for inspiration - my partner just doesn't get it and will probably leave me if I even dare to mention changing it :-)

Entirely depends on the stairs and what's under there. We live in a really old cottage and have a dog leg staircase with a half landing like that, which is also in the kitchen. On the edge of ours is a supporting wall for the landing. ( I'm a little intrigued as to what's holding yours up. ) Here' it is when i was renovating last year. I think, that if you ever decide to have a new kitchen, then i'd work with the space as it is, completely change the layout and design so that you work with it instead of against it, & build it in to the design. For now, i'd just go with what's been suggested above.

Sorry, I should have explained a little bit more. These are old units that I am simply moving. They are in very good condition. I have no problem with abandoning or not using some of the units. @ Jonathan that looks good. My intention is to get a 2400mm island as well. However, need to get these in first! @ Ellie I will do so when I have a chance a little later on! Thank you. The diagram I put up first shows the area where the units will go along with the window at the top. @rinq the larders are very tall. From memory they are approx 2.1m high. They both have openings of 1050mm for appliances. I havnt enquired about additional units but I'd much rather make the best out of what I have.

So what are you looking to do? Do you want to replace the whole lot or does you budget just stretch to paint?
I think the granite you have described can look great with a kitchen painted black with copper ironmongery but to balance it out you would probably have to paint the ceiling walls and lighten the floor too.
