Door color, paint shutters and garage door

House is very bland for me! I need help with front door color and if I should paint garage door and shutters as well. I plan to wrap the post with cedar to update it.

The garage door should blend in so that it is not the focal point of this beautiful house. If you were keeping the same paint colors, I would suggest using the same color as the shutters. Choose one of the darker colors from the brick for the garage door to blend in.

Yes, let the garage door blend in to keep it from being such a focal point. Paint the front door and window trim a soft white or cream. A light color will help pull the door out of the shadows a bit. I would remove the shutters which don't really suit the house. Also, your larger window is too big for them. Good idea to update the post in front.

Is the brick mortar the light tan color it appears on my screen? If so, that might be another option for a light color.

Thank you all very much for the ideas - very helpful. I'm also thinking of putting an extra parking space to the left of the garage - dark grey granite chippings with a granite sett path leading to the front door, so a more neutral colour than the blues and reds I was originally thinking off would work well I think - thanks again.

I think your instinct is spot on - the grey does not go with your lovely house at all! You said yourself, 'the grey craze', why follow the herd? Perhaps you should question why you want a 'contemporary colour' instead of one of the many choices which will enhance your beautiful period house. You don't see lovely pink Suffolk cottages, or the black and white half timbered houses characteristic of some areas daubed with grey because it's the latest fad.

To approximately equate the above analysis to the colours I sent you. Multiply the Value 8.08x10 = 80.8 Lightness and the Chroma x 5 = 2.95 in our colour space using LCh. So its approx 20 points lighter than Weimaraner & considerably closer to neutral.

I would be inclined to have wall washing lights either side. Not sure about a canopy unless it is pitched like the existing porch roof with brick infill either side but otherwise kept open. Maybe stick with the lights first to see if that alone does the trick. Making the bed on the left the same shape as that on the right and repeating the planting would help to bring symmetry. I am not sure about the two tall Pom Pom shrubs in front of the windows. Sorry I cannot make out what they are. Could they be moved one at each corner of the house perhaps to make a full stop? Taking away some of the grass to extend the drive in front of the door would open up the entrance too. It is difficult to see on the photo but the grass seems to curve towards the door. It would be better if it followed the curve of the drive out and away from the door, basically an expansion of your step that seems to be a curve, and then return in front of the bed on the left in the photo. You could have a path here in front of the left bed in the same material as the drive. I know planting and reconfiguration of your drive wasn’t on your remit so I hope you don’t mind!

I like the idea of wrapping your post in cedar. I agree that removing the shutters is a good idea. You could paint your soffits and window trim a color that closely matches your mortar. The current color of your post and overhang seems like it would work well. I would consider painting the garage door all one color. The darker color you have on there now should blend nicely with your brick. For your front door, I would pull the terracotta color from the brick to brighten it up. Love your flowerbeds!

There's definitely a lot you can do with this space! A quick, easy update that won't take a lot of time or resources as you're getting your other remodeling plans into place is to paint your door. Giving it a nice, bright color will help warm up the entryway and make it look immediately inviting. I'd paint the shutters sage green. Paint the garage door in the brown color that is currently on it.
