Other than buying a bungalow what can we do with our staircase?
Comments (12)If you're committed to changing the staircase, I would definitely recommend putting in some decent practical storage. We have a fairly narrow hall and the old cupboard under the stairs was a nightmarish mess of shoes bags and other junk. As part of our house remodel / extension we had a loft conversion and therefore decided to change the whole staircase. There is a small cupboard on the left for shopping bags etc. But what has revolutionised the hall is the pull-out cupboards, one for shoes and one for coats. The bottom of the coat cupboard also has a well for hats and gloves etc. My boys just automatically put their shoes away now and I don't have coats hanging on the banister. The few long coats we have hang neatly on the coat hooks behind the front door, with room for guest coats. If you haven't committed yet to a new staircase, the final picture was just inspiration for a spruce up. Finally, the glass "banisters" are lovely, but all that goes through my head is "kids and fingerprints"!...See MoreHelp! How do we light our double height kitchen/ dining snug area plea
Comments (11)Hi Hansbans73 Your project in the visuals looks amazing and I’m very jealous! I feel that the double height roof space and pitch definitely merits having a feature pendant, as it appears the pitch is central and so will offer a complete feel to the space. Downlights in the high ceiling will make the space feel too open in my opinion and, ideally, you want something that’ll sew each of the spaces together. If you could build a platform on the pitch to take a pendant, and you like contemporary styles, I would consider something like the Harco Loor Big Bubbles pendant (top photo below). It would fill the space nicely but wouldn’t obstruct your awesome view from the balcony, as you can see through it. Of course, decoration is subject to taste and there are plenty of other options - multiple pendants like the Muuto E27 pendants (bottom photo below) can be hung at varying heights and don’t cost the earth. Finally, adding in some 5amp sockets for complimentary table lamps and floor lamps will give your living space versatility. I hope this helps and look forward to seeing the final pictures! Comments (18)I guess this will come down to how much you want to spend, if you are prepared to do an extension out the back then assume you are comfortable with some structural work. Also if you are happy to lose the garage or some of it you actually have a much larger space to work with. If it were my house and I had the budget to do a complete ‘rejig’, i would do the following: 1. Push the bathroom, utility area and storage areas into the garage but still leaving a garage door with a much smaller ‘garage’ space for stuff we just dump in the garage. Add a door if possible to the garage much closer to the front door to access the storage area. Access the bathoorm and utility via the currently under stairs door. 2. Now move the kitchen to the right into the space currently occupied by the bathroom and study, creating space for a nice size island, room fo an American fridge freezer and tall cupboards etc. 3. Move the study to the left hand side, which would run from the garden wall where the first bifolds end down to the existing vertical beam column, effecitvely making use of this as part of that study and therefore it isnt just a column in the middle of the room. 4. You will be left with a large L shaped kitchen lounge diner, where you can either choose to have a play area in front of the kitchen or tv snug and dining area to the left of it or vice versa. Whatever suits! Obviously this is without seeing the actual spaces and room dimensions to see how much open space you would get but looks like could work from your floor plan. Maybe too much work though :)...See Morecan we fit a kitchen/dinner in our old bungalow front room…
Comments (2)Hi Bex! You're right - there are lots of options with bungalows! They're great because they're so flexible and easy to adapt. But all the choices can make it hard to decide. This is something I could help you with if you're looking for support and design help. It sounds as though you've already given this a lot of thought, which is great - exactly the right thing to do.
