Tired, room with no purpose - now a cosy snug!
Comments (0)This room was a big part of the reconfigured floor plan - the staircase originally went straight into the master bedroom, where you then had to walk through to get to the other rooms. This room was used as an empty entrance room. We moved the staircase in to the centre of the property, and manufactured a new oak staircase and recreated an entrance room which also had a cloakroom in. This meant upstairs, we could open the space right up and have 4 rooms leading off the stairs. Downstairs, it meant there was room for a snug, and a fireplace with access either side! Before: After: The living room was dated and a bit dark, it had a stone clad fireplace with a little fire which was drowned by the surround. The staircase was situated to the right hand side, so we moved it to the centre of the property and opened up the space. It now has a large open plan snug/living room and dining/garden room. We replaced the beams in oak to match existing. The floor is Aged & Smoked Oak engineered board. The fireplace has been rebuilt and repointed in parts, and forms an inglenook. We used an aged piece of oak for the new mantel. Before: After:...See MoreWindows! Under-cabinet ones in kitchen? Do I need side ones in snug?
Comments (7)Hi Emily and Jonathan! Thanks so much for the feedback. Emily - I didn't manage to attach the image that shows the new parking we'd have - see new picture I've just uploaded above of a birds eye view with additional hardstanding driveway in the front garden. - thanks for the vote re tall narrow west window! I'm coming round to the idea though my husband is unpersuaded and thinks will interfere with furniture too much. I think one in the corner just before the family room could work really well. Jonathan - yes the kitchen hasn't really been designed at all yet, the architectural technicians just showed the hob and sink for a rough idea that that area is the kitchen. But we can do what we like with the space really. There are already 2 sets of patio doors on the back of the house though so I think we can't really justify a third! (It might not be clear on the plans but the dining room ends in a modern glass box with heat resistant glass and within-the-upvc-double-glazing-blinds, which includes patio doors ?bifold depending on budget. Then the snug has more standard patio type doors and will probably be the main back garden route.) - generally I think we'd err towards a peninsula rather than an island, not for any real reason just tend to prefer the look of them. So probably a peninsula with a couple of bar stools, coming from the garden side of the room at the junction of the kitchen / dining area, and finishing where the island ends now. Think @Emily sounds like I haven't explained myself very well re eventual layout with train room - see attached jpeg to see what it will end up as (we haven't got the plans drawn this way for planning application, but the aim is to end up with this at the end of the works)....See Morefarmhouse colour scheme
Comments (6)I think you can go to town as they say with kitchens and bathrooms. As long as they fit in with the rest of the house, then of course you should have luxury and colour. Teal, gold and white will be great for the bathroom, you can make it fit with the rest of the house with the type of fittings you use, free standing baths, fancy traditional vanities etc. We are just finishing our main bathroom this week...........it's been a slog..........the little bit of wall that's on show ( not a lot ), is still clunch, but the tiles are stunning, we have an oblong freestanding bath painted in f&b railings, with white Lion feet . Although we have the traditional bath and vanity, the walk in Shower is definitely very modern in it's look, but with traditional fittings. Must get round to posting the pics.............still painting doors. If I get off Houzz for a while i might finish faster!...See MoreHow to arrange and decorate a snug room
Comments (2)Well done......and breath! Your room is lovely and just needs those finishing touches. I would put the plant on the floor next to the tv, then move the side table and sofa more to the right to centralise it. It looks a little pushed to one side at the moment. I think the wooden furniture is fine. Echoing the plant pot, you could add some boho cushions and a table lamp in rattan. However, brass would look nice too. Arch floor lamps can overwhelm a smaller room so how about an floor angled brass lamp if you don’t want a table lamp. I bought one from Dunelm and it looks very smart. Similar to the one in the first pic. The walls look bare but that can be remedied with a mixture of art, a mirror or, as you suggest, a gallery wall. I think there isn’t much space for a coffee table, so I would suggest another side table on the left, if there’s room....See MoreKate Home-Roberts
