Any ideas how to layout my kitchen?

Hello Houzzers! I'm planning on getting a new kitchen and would really love some suggestions on a new layout.

Here are some photos of existing space and a floor plan.

Maybe I could try to fit an island / peninsula? Should I go for a U shape, L shape or galley? It would be nice to still have a couple of bar stools.

It's a Georgian property so nice high ceilings.

Any suggestions welcome!

Also, if anyone has a Liverpool based kitchen fitter to recommend, that would be great.

Do the 500cm x 365m measurements relate to the external wall or internal wall?

We also have a north east facing kitchen, we used farrow and balls, Purbeck stone on our wall of units at the back of the kitchen (its warmer than using grey which can look cold in a north facing room), pelt on our peninsula and dimity on the walls, it give off pink hues during the day and is (nice) sort of creamy beige in the evening / on dull days. We took samples of our flooring and work top to a F&B shop/consultant and they were really helpful in confirming that the colours we wanted would work in our N/E facing room. I was pretty fixed on the the purbeck stone and pelt and it was they that suggested using dimity on the walls. Also as already suggested, tester pots and paint on large pieces of paper that you can move around the room is a good idea.

Okay, so here are my concerns with the current layout: with no space to the other side of the sink, where will the dirty/clean dishes go. In our house, we put dirty dishes on one side and when unloading the dishwasher, put stuff that still needs to be dried off on the other side. But you may well have another system of loading/unloading. Also, items that can't go into the dishwasher need to be somewhere when dirty and then put somewhere when clean. So, in my experience a sink needs counterspace on two sides. You do need somewhere to put appliances, like the toaster/kettle, coffee machine or maybe a stand mixer? If they are behind doors that aren't pocket doors, you'll be working in a 'confined space', which doesn't seem very practical. I've been through the whole thought process recently and we've decided to do without doors in front of the breakfast counter. Very happy with that decision. I'll post pics so you can see how it looks. We also have kitchen doors that lead to the pantry behind the tall bank of cupboards. We've put the ovens above each other, because one oven we already had and the other one is new and a slightly different design. This left space for two pull out larders, one either side of the ovens. Then we have a tall freezer, tall fridge, double doors to the pantry. We also have a separate coffee corner. Hope this helps.

The utility in the plans would give us the access through from front to back. We've lived here for years and have always thought we would just square off our house at the front and extend down the side and out back.... It's amazing how ideas start changing when you see plans drawn up. I wonder if it's going to be harder to plan making the utility into a usable space, rather than not having it at all and just extend what we have

Agree with others that’s there’s too much concrete which needs to be broke. Up with some greenery. but I disagree with others re the porch. I think I would put a porch in. The current entrance doesn’t look very inviting. you could put a modern twist on it and use wood cladding. The cladding could also be used to surround the garage door

Hi Jenny,

I would start by making a wish list of what you really need. This will determine your list of appliances that will need housing, how much worktop will be needed, how many sinks, how large your hob will be, how much storage to store food and kitchenware etc.

As it is an open plan space you will need to consider the sizes of sofas/armchairs that you have or are buying and size of dining table. Another important thing to consider is the sofas orientation. Are you having TV in the room? Where are the sockets for this etc. All of this really matter when you are looking at the layout of an open plan space.

Take advantage of high ceilings in period property and make sure you have easy access to all every day items otherwise you will clutter your worktops. Look at options of designs where living room cabinetry is integrated with kitchen.

Start with your detailed brief and the layout will evolve naturally.
