Want a modern living room but have a brown carpet - any ideas?
I recently bought my gran's house following her sudden death at the beginning of this
year. She had only just had the house redecorated before her passing and so there are brand new, good quality carpets throughout. However, the carpets are light brown. This is my first home and id like to have modern decor throughout, but it seems like a waste to rip the carpets out. What can I do in the living room that would make it look fresh and modern without replacing the light brown carpet? Apart from the carpet, I have a complete blank canvas furniture wise and so am looking for colour and fabric suggestions for furniture, soft furnishings, wall colour and skirting. Thanks!

6 years agoI definitely think you could work with the brown carpets and still have a modern look. I wouldn't try to disguise or hide the carpet though, I'd use it as the anchor for the rest of the room. You might have done this already but do a search for brown carpets on the photos here and you'll see lots of ideas like the one I've attached.
The only other thing I would say is don't feel too bad about changing it if keeping it will mean having something you don't love, along with a huge expense in money and time making it work. At the end of the day, if this is your house, you have to be happy with it :)

Comments (7)Plenty room for a dining end/area in your room. Suggest a rug in the lounge section -same length as the sofa- to help define and separate each part of the room. Also makes for a cosy look and feel. Currently you have a roman blind in the lounge area and this is the best treatment for that window- suggest some colour and pattern to the fabric in a new blind, coordinating with the rug. The photo suggests floor length curtains in the dining area? Is there patio doors behind? If so again new curtains would be best option - full length and with colour and pattern as in lounge. Look at Prestigious Textiles fabric ranges for ideas. I suggest floor lamps in the lounge and a couple if small side tables rather than a coffee table. Try Dwell for side tables to match with your dining table i.e. gloss white- this will pull the two areas of the room together whilst keeping them as distinct spaces. Comments (4)Do you need both of the sofas on the long wall? I would swap what looks to be the larger of the 2 with the one in front of the window and perhaps sell the other. I like the wood floor but if you're on a budget you could add a light rug instead which should help? Do you need the nets for privacy? what sort of styles do you like and do you have a budget in mind? Plants, lamps, cushions etc would lift it. 6 years agoThank you all! I was looking at a light grey fabric couch similar to the one pictured above so it's comforting to know that it won't clash too much. In an ideal world I would just rip out the carpet as jones1987 suggested, but it's the same carpet throughout the house so I would like to avoid it. Does anyone have any opinion on what would be best for the skirting? I'm torn between a crisp white, stripping back to the natural light wood and having a light wooden coffee table as well to keep the room bright and to draw up from the brown, or just to embrace the brown and paint the skirting a dark colour, bit like that pictured below.

6 years agoI'd go for crisp white if you want a modern look. And a slightly darker white for the walls.
Maybe something like this (but test colours out first or at least get the paper swatches and stick them to the walls in various places so you can see how they work in different lights and at different times of the day). Also depends on the upholstery colour of your furniture.
