Wooden floors - Different stain in different rooms

Hi,

I'm considering having two different wooden floor colours - natural varnished pine and walnut in different rooms. Essentially the smaller rooms with the lighter floor and the larger rooms (bedroom and lounge) in walnut.

I think both colours look good but I'm wondering if mixing them is going to make the overall look of the place a bit off.

Is it better to have one colour throughout?

Personally I think these two woods give a different identity- walnut is quite sophisticated and pine can be mellow and country. I think you home needs to have a consistent feel even if you make different choices in different rooms

Personally I wouldn't mix the floor colours - especially when made of the same material. I have a dark wood floor colour throughout my house (except bathroom). The spare bedroom is quite small but if styled in a thoughtful way doesn't have to feel small - even with a dark floor.

I like houses that has rooms that flow, rather than clash, as it can feel disjointed with many styles under one roof.

For the smaller rooms you could always put down a light coloured rug to lighten the floor colour while maintaining a coherent design.

Thanks for the tips! Good idea on the mosaic with the different colours. I think I may have found a tile that's close enough to the kitchen to use in the bathroom, then I can use a different tile in the hallway so they aren't close enough to compare properly! Do you think that would make sense aesthetically? Unfortunately the kitchen tiles are proving a nightmare to match - all sorts of colours, slightly speckly, and I can't tell how much of that is just wear!

It will look fine, seen and done it several times. Key thing to remember is to ensure that levels between the two are the same, you don't want a lip running through the room or you'll constantly curse it when you're walking barefoot. Where the wood meets the tiles, you want some sort of trimmer, whether its a row of small decorative tiles, a border strip of wood, a sunken threshold etc Reason being you will have tiles edges against wooden edges and it will look messy.

Thanks ladies. I like monochrome neutrals, I just don't want the entire house in this scheme as it makes the place feel samey , colourless and therefore rather lifeless and dull. I am branching out since my post into this popular scheme that seems to be around atm involving sage mixed with dashes of muted blush and muted teal. This land of colour is a brave new world for me, ha !

I would recommend to keep with one stain. To be fully happy with your place is good to keep bits simply.

I would always have the same floor where possible so it flows from room to room.

Thanks for all the advice! It seems like the consensus is to keep one colour and for me I think that will be walnut. The dark floors seem to create a nicer style imo and for the smaller rooms like the kitchen I'm likely to tile over it at some point anyway. :)
