Glass pendants over island?

I love the look but wonder if they're too bright for others as the kitchen will be open concept.

Yes! They look beautiful and don't bother my eyes.

No! Not the best choice for open concept

Yes, pictures would be good.

If you're thinking of clear glass you could use lower watt bulbs if you felt they were too bright. If you are going to rely on the light from them, frosted might be a good choice. More information would help up us with your decision....

The Pooky website had loads of lovely lights. Wow! I also received some suggestions on another thread. I trawled through lots of websites today! I combined some ideas into a collage. Any thoughts? The dark pewter pendant is what I'm trying to co-ordinate with (I love the matt grey finish and its shape), whilst not losing the light airy feeling of the new living area with it's pitched roof, and large windows/doors. Hence why I thought about a glass pendant. But using glass pendants was just an idea. I'm open to other ideas. I also wondered if I should look at some "Hamptons style lights"? I like a timeless, calm, look.

It really depends on how high your ceilings are and the type of look you are going for. Will they make a statement or are they purely functional? I'd usually go for pendants with fixed shades because I'm usually committing to a style and I've chosen something I truly love. However, you can get some beautiful glass shades from places like made.com . If the lights over the island are mood lighting and not task lighting (ie eating or atmosphere vs cooking lights) then go for a warmer power wattage bulb. We have all exposed bulbs in our open plan area and I’m swapping some of them for lower wattage and vintage style as it’s easier on the eyes, lol! If the lights are higher up and not directly around head height then a brighter one would also be ok. E27 is the size of the bulb ie chunkier stem vs the E14 which has that little thin stem. You can use any type of bulb in the fitting as long as it’s the right size stem and doesn’t exceed the light limits. LED us better and longer lasting of course.

I love my glass pendants but they do get dusty...... any recommendations for easy cleaning? Please don't say " just give it a dust or clean" I'm looking for tips, eg use washing liquid or vinegar (those are not suggestions!) So to answer your question.....maybe we just need to learn how to clean them better?

I've noticed that pendants that have a darker color or frosted glass tend to not have that "hot spot" that burns your retina and leaves a bruise, whereas clear glass and a bright light can really do a number on eyes - especially with older people.

I love pendant lighting. There are bulbs you can use for a softer light depending on the style you want.
