Hi Amy I would go for roman blinds inside the recess. Curtains won't work in the space as you have radiators under the windows (cill length curtains are a no-go!). Your existing decor doesn't lend itself to loud patterns or colours so I would look for a fabric with an interesting texture that tones with the other colours in the space.
