Bedroom colour... To dark?

Hi, my husband has fallen in love with this wallpaper for our bedroom in our new farm house. I think it might be too dark/masculine. Although I really like the paper I'm not sure if it will match our white French carved bed & furniture... Any suggestions? Really scared of committing to paper & then finding it just doesn't work! Help!

I am not a designer but I think with white furniture and the right lighting it would be a very romantic bedroom :-)

I agree with Jonathan about the blind, it is stealing light. Low ikea cube shelving units are good with stacked clear lidded boxes from Rymans for storing lego. I would also suggest a bed base with space underneath as you can get long narrow boxes that can be stored under beds and tucked away. This means the messy clutter aspect of lego can be hidden making space for displaying their finished models. Although he is young now, I would say that investing in bespoke flexible storage may be something that is used for years to come. Our house was actually chosen in part to accommodate lego and drum kits, so determined was I to have spaces for creative play rather than just gadgets which is often the norm. On the subject of colour, dark rooms tend to benefit from two approaches - either paint in a lighter reflective (but slightly warm) paint, and/or inject some saturated colour. Subtlety is often lost in these situations so something like a wall of bright orange (maybe the window wall) would give a bit of focus to the room and connect with all of his toys and bits and bobs. Also habitat do bedding in such a bright orange you need sunglasses, this could be used in conjunction with his duvet cover. These are shelves in my son's room, very simple and not costly to have built.

I found the Dulux Visualator, or whatever it’s called, to be pretty useless. I used it once to visualise my old sitting room colour just to see how accurate it was. My walls were Dulux Elderflower so compared it on the Dulux online thingy and it was completely different!

One day I will resurface my bedroom walls and paint them a dark colour. With my 18ft ceilings it may take a while to save up! I need a really dark room to sleep at all and although white bedrooms look amazing in sunshine, they can be too light to sleep in.

I don't understand what 'would be hard to live with' means to be honest. I also agree that advice on this subject is totally contradictory, which doesn't help. The colour of light in a North facing room is quite blue, so anything like a pale grey with a blue tinge will look even bluer. Some people like that, but I personally wouldn't, I find cold rooms depressing. If you want a neutral, then you go across the wheel and select one that is a bit warmer and has some red or orange in and that will create a colour that when combined with the blue light is a neutral. Joa's White, Dimity or colours like that, will look quite neutral in a North facing room. Another option is to go for a more saturated colour such as a yellow, as this can break through the greyness. If you go for a pale colour, then anything like a creamy green could look sickly, so a more definite green would work. If you go for a pale neutral then red based ones will help. I tried about twenty in my kitchen and drove myself nuts! 'Joanna' by Little Greene is a brilliant neutral with a tinge of red in it, that may be worth a look.

You can turn the grey base of the paper white and the grey line black, black white and gold will create a great combination. But, don't use it all over the room, use it only behind the bed, it will go well with white walls.

Hello. I don't have enough information to make a decision. What color are the other walls in your room?

Are there any other colors you plan on bringing in? It could look very elegant if you keep to the white charcoal and gold.

The room is a blank canvas at the moment, so starting from scratch. I would prefer something softer, but my husband loves the look & texture of the paper in the pic.

The paper has no white in it as it looks in the picture. It's a pewter/silver colour.

I like the texture of the paper and the pewter color, but I think it is too busy.

Emma, I say "white" because you said your bedroom furniture is white, correct?

Based on the information you have given me, I have to tell you that your combination will be "out of style". The trend today is toward simplicity.

In addition, I think the busy paper will compete with your white, French carved bedroom set. Could we see a photo of that bedroom set?

There will be too much small, busy stuff going on.

If we could see a photo of the room and the bedroom set, I think all of us could make a better recommendation.

I think we can find something that will make you and your husband happy.

I like the furniture. I'm not sure about the wallpaper. I think it's too much when put together with the furniture. If your husband wants something silver, try to find something more subdued.

You could indeed use this paper as a full head wall, but you could also add a chair rail and paper the top part, or large panels like in victorian homes. Or paper a wall with a vanity or closet like in the furniture picture you added above. Some powder pink (bedding, curtains, ceiling maybe?), gold and cream will make it look romantic instead of masculine.

You could get creative and copy one of the ornaments from the paper, enlarge it multiple times and paint it above the head of the bed.

I love the look of tin panel ceilings, have you considered putting the paper onto the ceiling?

Emma, I have made an attempt at showing you the wallpaper in your bedroom. If you can take another photo of the wallpaper place vertically and you stand right in front of it (not at an angle), I might be able to get a better result with photoshop.

The idea of doing the ceiling has merit, but just the ceiling please ,unfortunately the wallpaper your husband likes is patterned one way , it won't work on the ceiling, it needs to be seen from all angles, if you are going to use it then do the one wall behind the bed, matching the paint color to the lighter grey/silver and plain drapes in the darker tone , everything else in the room in white, art frames,lamps bedding etc...I think it will look stunning. enjoy

There's also this to consider... what is "his" in this room? In other words, who picked out the furniture? Who picks what in the room? He really likes this paper, if this is really the only thing that he got to really pick out, let him have this bone, he has to live there too, ya know? I see a LOT of frou-frou bedrooms on here of married people and I think, they do realize that a guy has to sleep there too, right?

Though not my style, I think the paper is beautiful and its ornate style goes with your ornate furniture. The curves in the pattern mimic the curves in the headboard. However, it actually may be too similar to the furniture because when the two are next to each other, the curves and pattern in each will get lost. Perhaps a similar paper with a more subtle pattern would work.

My sons have just put a similar wallpaper and believe me it looks absolutely stunning on the walls, when you look at it in a catalog it is not the same. I think it will all go together. The usually have 4-5 pages that go with a main wallpaper, my sons did two walls in the similar to yours and the other two walls, a plain one ( same colour as in background of design).

I'd like to add you could paint everything a color/grey, so no white walls or ceiling, only the bed and the trims in white (okay, maybe the doors too if it's a bit too dark). This way the bed will stay the main focal point. Even pale pink or rich cream walls would help you achieve this look.

Thanks for the pics. We cannot look at the wallpaper in a vacuum. I am trying to look at where you are trying to go as a whole.

How are you seeing your ornate French furniture fitting in with your farmhouse? Right now, I am having a hard time with it. Then to add something else ornate?

Here is my suggestion: would you be willing to paint the bed? You could probably leave the dresser and sidestand cream. What about painting the bed a deep charcoal and making your bedroom pewter, charcoal and cream? The walls could be more of a pewter with maybe one accent wall in a deeper charcoal (although I am not a fan of accent walls).

This way, you are making the room more masculine and toning down the ornateness of the bed. It will have a subtle elegaance.

I love the paper with your bed, and as was pointed out, your husband picked this paper... You don't want him to be forgotten in this whole process and lose interest in making a home for both of you. By including him in the decision-making process, you are paving the way for the future. If you cut him off at the knees now, he might not be generous with you in the future... Paint the rest of the room in the silver/pewter/greenish grey, use the pale, pale green in your bedding, and the yellow as and accent in pillows and art. Trim and doors painted in white will set everything off and make you furniture seem "right" in the room. A pale silver carpet a shade lighter than your walls will be the finishing touch!

I love the design of the wallpaper - it's beautiful. Just like someone else said, it IS dramatic. But that's not ALL it can be. That wall paper can be a lot of things. It is very attractive & would carry off a beautiful look IF it's done right. My personal opinion ....

I have only just found this site/forum/app... & I just want to say thank you to ALL of you for your opinions. I think the concept of the app is a fantastic idea... And will most definitely be posting more dilemmas I have as I go along room by room... I'm far from being an expert but I will try to return the favour by giving positive opinions & options where I feel I can! Thanks again to you all

@ Ringreation - those tin ceiling tiles/designs are AWESOME.
The Hospital Home Lottery 2012 Master Bedroom is simply BEAUTIFUL - I'm totally loving that look, and the Hollywood Highrise is attractive as well. Wow now I'm thinking about wallpapering my bedroom and/or livingroom lol. BUT I rent an apartment - not sure if I can do that ...... :(

Normally I do not go anywhere near wallpaper, but this one is absolutely fab - and your hubby has fantastic taste. Paint the remainder of the walls a neutral colour - (not white), and you will have the most romantic bedroom ever. Please post picture when you do this.
