How do we find out artwork style?

Hi, we've recently moved into our first owned property and we want to hang some lovely art as we've got high ceilings and therefore big walls.

We have some lovely pictures of bushy park across the road which we'd like to use and we love London and Richmond/bushy park and it's wildlife which surrounds us.

However we aren't really sure other than this what our personal artwork style is. We know that artwork is expensive and we are willing to
Invest but I guess we're scared of getting it wrong.

Any suggestions for how to discover what type of things you like? Is there a process to go through? Any websites that will help?

I think we're touching a very broad subject here. Art can be many things. Not necessarily paintings what you put on the wall.
For example I like anything floral and botanical and appreciate the work that's gone into making or growing something, wether it's a beautiful climbing rose, a wood carving, hand painted water colour or a hand embroidered cushion. My hubby in the other hand likes the inner workings of engines, computers and anything mechanical, to him this is art. So you can imagine the eclectic mix of stuff we have in our house:)
Good place to start is have a browse at sites that sell prints like Art.co.uk or Allposters, there are thousands of images but you might be able to narrow it down to things you like/dislike.
Alternatively shop around, if you see something you love then take a photo or better still get it! If you have a local art college you could also take a visit there. I'm sure lots of students would be happy to sell their pieces, you'd get something original at the fraction of the price of an art gallery plus you may even be able to commission someone for something unique for yourself. I might be a bit biased as I went to art college myself and could rant on for ages on this subject but I've hoped to have helped a little.

Thank you, that's a great idea to start with things that we find pleasing and work out where representations of those might best fit around the house.

I'll also look in to art colleges, I never thought about this.

We have some bonkers stuff around - cameraless photos of mushrooms by the very talented Susan Derges. Jason Martin's painting on aluminium. The spectators triptych - I've always refused to sleep in that guest bedroom because of the creepy feeling that they would be staring at me all night. Some scary Kabuki prints (they really scare me!! I'd take this as a great opportunity to have some fun and explore making your own piece of art. From the space (that I can see), a canvas would suit being placed above, either leaned against the surface or elevated. I'd lead towards to being elevated. I'd say get a cheap canvas with some oil based paint and just try different shapes and different ways to add the paint to the canvas, don't try to make actual shapes but try blending colours (a spray drinking bottle makes an excellent tool for adding blending) in an abstract style. In term of colours, I really feel burnt orange and a mix between duck egg blue and royal blues would make a very eye-catching scheme for that area. If you do try a bit of art, make sure to send us an image! I guarantee you'll have fun doing this, and you'll be surprised how well it could turn out. Good luck!

Hi, I think that you have to find a line that you can align your larger art pieces on. Not sure how to explain it, so I've made a visual for you. I've put the two smaller pieces together, so they form 'one piece' and aligned the bottom of all large pieces and put the other smaller one between them to form a connection. A common line makes it visually calmer. I've also pulled your chair a little bit forward, to give it some 'breathing space'.

I teach art and my sister is an artist. She exhibits in galleries and does open studios. It is really worth checking out which towns do this as it is a great way to buy art directly form the artist.

I think art is very personal & not something that can be looked up on the net. It's what you like & means something to you - whether just you like it, a memory etc etc. It need not be expensive - all depends on what style you like i.e I prefer art in frames so I have things than mean something to me/I like etc but I have prints/cards etc but I have had them professionally framed with good mounts as this can make something cheaper look good. Etsy is quite a good place to look at for prints.

If you are in London then check out The Other Art Fair which takes place next weekend in Brick Lane. Lots of Art Fairs around the country and they're not all frumpy watercolours. Saatchi Art is a good resource for finding styles you might like: https://www.saatchiart.com/shows/uk-spotlight
