Blinds or curtains at bi-fold doors?
Comments (4)We moved into a house with bifold doors and I didn't want to spend an absolute fortune on large bespoke curtains for them. So I found some beautiful ones on the high street that were the correct height, then bought two pairs. I found an extra long curtain rail online and whilst I was going to originally sew the pairs together to make two large curtains - one either side of the door, I actually left them separate. This way I can pull three of the four closed but leave one pulled back on the opening side door, making access easier. Hope that makes sense!...See MoreLarge kitchen layout dilemma, help!
Comments (5)Hi diviyag, I have looked at your proposed plan and noted a just few ideas on the drawing attached here. This U shaped kitchen would be improved with a peninsular ( they aren't just a feature of the 70's anymore!) and I would recommend this to make a soft divide to a large open space. But importantly if the hatched section (breakfast bar style) was raised slightly it would provide a place for closer social interaction with the kitchen (imagine sitting there on a bar stool whilst someone else prepares food) we don't always want to sit formally at a table....AND it would also provide a screen on the opposite side of it on the worktop for busy mess which we cant always avoid. This is a priority for an open plan scheme. You could actually think about putting the dishwasher and bin there too, as washing up will likely arrive to the kitchen from the table and this would be a good spot to put it down ready for stacking into the dishwasher. Position the sink where you have put the hob. You haven't mentioned fridge but if you wanted to have a tall fridge (integrated) or a USA FF place this on the wall between the patio doors and kitchen window. I would recommend creating a feature wall where I have reappointed the hob. Would advise further if I knew more about the project/ your style/ appliance requirements etc. Now is the time to think about your lighting - again a priority for an open plan scheme. To get you started; you need to create at least one light source which is not just from the ceiling i.e. mid height. You have an opportunity for a nice side board/ dresser on to which you could add 2 x table lamps. Add a feature chandelier pendant over the table if possible. Add smaller pendants over the peninsular. If you make a recess in the wall for the TV to sit in (50-75 mm) you can 'hide' it when not in use by various home tech solutions, or use a fixing mechanism to tilt the screen to serve dining table / sofa area . Finally to bring your styling up to date by adding large floor standing plants....See MoreCrittal Style Aluminium sliding or folding doors
Comments (186)Fiona - I’ve been looking into replacing some doors with Crittal style and have contacted loads of suppliers and companies. The one that I’ve been most impressed with is the company mentioned above by Lou Valdini - Merlin Windows in Yorkshire. (I’m in the East Midlands). They gave me a competitive quote really quickly and then I got a quote from the fitter mentioned. (They fit across the UK and they link in with Merlin to ensure timings etc). It’s likely that we will go ahead in the next few months. (Just need to convince husband as he prefers chunky timber 😂)...See MoreBifold or sliding aluminium doors - 2.6m opening
Comments (9)Hi Keswing, Although bifolding doors can give you a 95% width opening, they will be closed much of the time, and when they are, there are thicker and numerous sightlines blocking the view. Your short patio space will be restricted by the stacked doors too. You can of course have them opening and stacking inside the property, although this may cause similar problems of limiting space indoors. Your main exit door could be on the left or right depending on configuration and which side you want to stack the doors so this should not be an issue for you - why do you only have the option for a main door on the right? You could have two exit doors in the middle if you really wanted and the bifolding doors stack to either side, but the width is not really wide enough for this. A 3-panel sliding doors system, with all three panels sliding will give you the sliding door system with the biggest open gap, but will have two visible sightlines when closed. A 2-panel sliding doors sytem will provide the best view (as only one sightline in the middle of the doors will be visible when closed) but the openable width will only be 50%. Sliding doors with exceptionally slim sightlines, such as our VISION Ultra Slim Sliding Doors would be my recommendation :-)...See MoreHBD Systems
