Would like advice on designing around this

Hello
My partner and I have recently rented a new flat and are looking to furnish ti and design it as we want, instead of using a mish-mash of the things we already owned. We're both would like a contemporary, chic look in our dining/living room (think Mr Kates OMG We Bought A House series) but we have a wooden beam running the whole length of the room and I'm coming up blank on how to incorporate it. I'd like to keep the flowers on there too if we can.
I would also like to put a curtain up by our patio door (instead of the blind) but the ceiling is already slanted before the door starts and I'm not entirely sure if/how we can do it!
If you had any advice I would really appreciate it! Thanks
