Curb appeal improvements

Hi, we're currently renovating the attached property but unsure what to do about the outside look. We're replacing the windows with uPVC white windows and have ordered a sage green new door.

Main dilemma is what to do with the cladding - it needs painting/varnishing at the very least but we could remove it or render it - where the current cladding is! Does anyone have any ideas which would improve the look the most?

On top, we are creating a bigger driveway for two cars on the left side and will be tidying up the front garden.

Good afternoon,

If you are seeking to change the appearance of the property then you may need to seek planning approval from your local council, such as rendering the façade of the property.

We would suggest doing something similar to the photo below, with a combination of timber cladding and white render.

Front: Renew the windows to the main house. Put in some metal frame units. Change the colour. Try Velfac. They do a unit which is timber on the inside. Break up the garage wall with some planting/ shrubs. Possibly more planting around the border of the garden. The flat roof part of the house isn't great - may be add a pitch... Rear: New windows to the main house. I agree extension right across or 2 new extensions that match with a courtyard between with new doors from house. Again, break the elevation/site lines with some additional planting. Pitched roof over the flat roof would definately help here.

Personally I think you leave the red..... it's not my favourite but you ultimately devalue your semi if you make it very different from your attached neighbour. Personally I would look at putting the front door on the front of the porch and adding a garage door (perhaps a side opening one.). You might also consider having the yellow brick of the newer additions stained darker to match the original brick. Lastly I would try to reconcile the untidy windows above the carport by swapping the little window for a velux and centralising the other window.

Definitely get some plants back in there. However it looks like your photos are before and after removing plants along the boundary so perhaps this isn’t part of the plan. Could you plant some low shrubs under the window and mulch them with gravel to suppress the weeds? Including additional areas of gravel where the cars aren’t generally parked would help to soften all that expanse of hard landscaping. You could then plant ground hugging plants, that don’t mind being driven over on occasion, into the gravel.

Looking at the windows they are grey. To balance I would get a new grey porch. From the age of the house I would think this was built as an open porch that has then been filled in. Any conservatory or window company would be able to replace the whole structure for you with better styling and insulation. The plant looks like a clematis Montana which grows really quickly and needs regular trimming after flowering is over. You might be better training the shrub on the right across the top of the doorway. I would first cut it back against the wall so you can see what you’ve got. It might look a bit shabby initially but will then regenerate - feed it. If you want a climber on the left I would go for Star Jasmine - Trachelospermum Jasminoides. Much easier to control.

How about a porch at the front that matches the roof line? It could be under permitted development without the need for planning...

Have you considered just choosing a bright colour and painting the wood frames and panelling along with the garage door in one colour to unify the frontage?
