Pantry shelving

We are thinking of starting to get the pantry started as the next stage in our renovation. We have already got the wine racks and spice rack and will buy baskets for veg. However, for the shelving, I am unsure whether to go for MDF or pine. What would others suggest please?

I voted pine because I guess they would be taking a lot of weight.

MDF is more stable but you'd need to paint it as it wouldn't look right in its raw finish and wouldn't be easy to wipe.

I'd consider MFC as it has a choice of coloured finishes and is easily wipeable.

This is similar to Spur shelving - the weakness is on the hook that connects the underside of the shelf to the uprights. Personally with the amount of weight that you propose putting on shelves I would opt for something that has been drilled directly into the wall. I know the uprights are drilled, but it is the small bracket is the problem. The larger brackets drilled into the wall as per the photos from rickster88 is your best bet.

Look at the gadgets and storage items you intend to keep in there and draw the walls to scale and configure shelving to suit the heights and depths of what you need to store. Remember the allow for the shelf thickness and the bracket or support etc too . Things like mixers and juicers could be kept ready to use at an optimum height ( ie you don't want to be stretching up or bending down to use them ) light weight things like cereals could be kept up high. Heavy items mid to low. Baskets with all your baking things could be stored together to make it easy to lift one basket into your kitchen to use etc ? Allow relatively easy access to view meters etc ! Take your time and keep ticking off things you've allowed for on the drawing ! You'll get there eventually !!

Custom built shelving is still best as it will allow you to use all of the space. You may be able to fit in a small set of drawers immediately in front of you when you walk in for small items that need to be contained so that you don't loose them. Other than that, you could also consider crates for storage of items such as food processors, which have lots of bits that go with them, so that they all stay together. The crates can go on the floor or on the shelves!

As others have indicated, ventilation is critical - especially if you will be introducing additional dampness from 2 of the “wettest” appliances possible! I’d certainly be looking to introduce a fan, and would look to have ventilation in or at the door to the hallway(?) Ensuring there is enough heat in the area will help limit the risks of condensation - I would hope regular use of washer & dryer would provide enough. It is important, though, to properly treat even the small amount of mould you’ve found now, before it can start to gain a foothold. Cleaning down, painting on a suitable mould-blocking barrier before final paint is well worth it - especially if you are about to cover over the area with a couple of appliances you will rarely want to move! Beech worktop would be a great choice. You can get a 3m length for a little over £100 and split down the middle will make two 30cm deep shelves.

MDF needs to be painted, its hard to get a clean look on cut edges but it is an inexpensive option and remains stable. I have made shelves out of left over kitchen work top and they are very stable, though can be heavy so fixing has to be good

Personally, I'd go for a solid wood in at least 20mm thickness. Oak, ash and beech are all very inexpensive, harder wearing and more stable than pine (a softwood rather than hardwood) and, in my opinion, are far more attractive. 25-28mm thick worktop/shelve sections are very affordable, and if you plan carefully, you can get all your shelves out of 2,3 or 4m length with minimal waste. Generally come in a varity of widths from 600mm to 900mm plus, so pick based on the overall depth(s) of shelves you want, and cut down for multiple shelves.

Have a look at Worktop Express for an idea on costs, though we can source the same products at cheaper, trade prices.

An oak, ash or beech pantry will look heaps better than pine, last longer and probably add more value to your property.
